Biography: Mergers and Acquisitions

William Braithwaite is a senior partner in the Toronto office of Stikeman Elliott LLP, and former head of the office's corporate group. He is also a member of the firm's partnership board and executive committee. Mr Braithwaite practises primarily in mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance. He has represented a wide range of corporations, boards of directors, dealers and institutional shareholders. He has also represented various governments and regulatory authorities on policy and other initiatives.

Mr Braithwaite is internationally recognised as a leader in the fields of M&A, capital markets, corporate and commercial law, corporate finance, corporate governance, investment funds & asset management, private equity and venture capital and securities by numerous publications and listings.

Mr Braithwaite was appointed as counsel to the IDA (Investment Dealers' Association) Task Force to examine the modernisation of Canada's securities legislation. He is a member of the Senior Securities Legal Advisory Group to the OSC. He is a past chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Ontario Securities Commission. He is also a Special lecturer in Osgoode Hall Law School's part-time LLM programme. He has participated in numerous panels and conferences on corporate and securities law and is the author of numerous articles on corporate and securities law.

Mr Braithwaite completed his LLB at the University of Western Ontario and his BA at the University of Windsor. He went on to receive his LLM at the London School of Economics.

Mr Braithwaite is a senior partner in the Toronto office of Stikeman Elliott LLP, practising primarily in the area of securities and corporate law, specialising in M&A. He has represented a wide range of corporations, boards of directors, dealers and institutional shareholders. He has also represented governments and regulatory authorities on policy and other initiatives.

Mr Braithwaite is recognised by Lexpert magazine as one of Canada's top-30 M&A lawyers and by the annual Lexpert Directory as a practitioner "most frequently recommended" in the corporate and commercial; corporate finance and securities, and M&A sectors. He is recognised internationally in numerous survey-based directories and is included in the latest edition of The Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada (Lexpert/American Lawyer Media). He was also listed in the 2007 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the areas of corporate law and mergers and acquisitions.

He is a past chairman of the advisory committee of the Ontario Securities Commission. He was formerly a special lecturer at the University of Toronto and currently teaches in Osgoode Hall Law School's part-time LLM programme. He has participated in numerous panels and conferences and authored many articles on corporate and securities law. He is also a member of the Stikeman Elliott partnership board and executive committee.
