Biography: Commercial Arbitration

George Bermann heads teaching and research in international arbitration at Columbia Law School, where he is both Jean Monnet professor of European Union Law and Gellhorn Professor of Law, and serves as director of the European Legal Studies Center. He teaches and writes in transnational litigation and arbitration, comparative law, European and EU Law and WTO dispute resolution. He is a member of the faculty, regularly teaching arbitration and transnational litigation at the University of Paris, Institut des Sciences of Politiques (Paris) and the College d'Europe (Bruges).

He has been arbitrator (both sole and party-appointed, both ad hoc and institutional) in arbitrations worldwide across all fields of law, and also regularly advises counsel in international arbitration and litigation. He is a member of the roster of international arbitrators of the ICC's US national committee and the AAA's International Center for Dispute Resolution (ICDR). He is a director of the AAA and member of the academic advisory board of the Institute of Transnational Arbitration (ITA). He appears regularly before courts and arbitral tribunals as court- or party-appointed foreign law expert on French and other European laws.

George is currently chief reporter of the ALI Restatement of the US Law of International Commercial Arbitration and president of the Académie Internationale de Droit Comparé. He is the author of Transnational Litigation (West) and International Arbitration (West forthcoming) and numerous books and articles on international arbitration and litigation, EU law and comparative law generally.

He was educated at Yale College, Yale Law School and the University of Paris, and holds an honorary degree from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.
