Thomas H Beck, a partner in Sidley's New York office, focuses his practice on complex chemical and pharmaceutical litigation matters. He has played significant roles, including as lead counsel, in chemical and pharmaceutical litigation at both the trial and appellate levels for leading pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnology companies. He has also counselled clients in connection with drug analogue candidates, fusion protein candidates, recombinant DNA techniques, analytical methods involving viral DNA mutations and medical device technologies.

Mr Beck has appeared as lead counsel in major litigation for clients including GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Sanofi-Aventis and others concerning, for example, the anti-diabetic drug rosiglitazone maleate, the anti-cancer drug paclitaxel and the platelet inhibitor agent clopidogrel bisulfate. He was lead counsel for defendant Immunomedics concerning labelled antibodies and for plaintiff Enzo Biochem concerning labelled nucleotides. In addition, he has played a leading role in litigations for American Home Products (Wyeth), involving the antibiotic cefaclor; for Cetus, concerning the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin; for Exxon, concerning lubricating oil additives; and for Union Carbide, concerning polyethylene processes. Mr Beck has also been lead counsel in successful multimillion-dollar mediation and arbitration efforts.

Mr Beck has been active in the New York Intellectual Property Law Association and was a member of the board of directors, and, among other things, served as chairman of the committee on litigation practice and procedure. He was profiled in the November 2003 IP Law & Business article, 'Hooked on Drugs' (pp36-44), concerning the Bristol v RPR litigation.
