Commercial Arbitration

Biography: Commercial Arbitration

John Bang is a senior foreign legal adviser and the co-founder of Bae Kim & Lee's international arbitration and litigation practice group, the recognised leader in dispute resolution in Korea and abroad.

John has amassed extensive domestic and international arbitration experience at a very young age. John has acted as counsel in more than 40 commercial arbitral proceedings in Asia, Europe and North America under the rules of all major international arbitral institutions including, among others, the ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA, SIAC, JCAA, and KCAB (Korean Commercial Arbitration Board). He has represented companies in construction, automobile manufacturing, financial services, telecommunications, steel manufacturing, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries, to name a few.

John was a principal member of the arbitration team that obtained an award valued at approximately US$300 million for a Korean telecommunications research institute in an ICC arbitration proceeding against one of the world's largest telecommunications companies. This dispute, involving royalties from the sale of equipment using digital cellular technology, is believed to be one of the largest monetary awards ever recovered by a Korean entity in international arbitration. He is currently representing a Korean government-affiliated organisation in an ICC arbitration to be held in New York against one of Korea's largest conglomerates and one of Japan's largest financial services groups in connection with the sale of a prominent life insurance company in Korea. The value of this arbitration is likely to exceed US$1.5 billion.

John was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University School of Law. Before joining Bae Kim & Lee, John served as a federal law clerk for Kathryn C Ferguson USBJ.
