Biography: Patents

Tal Band is one of the managing partners of S Horowitz & Co, where he heads the largest intellectual property group of any major Israeli commercial law firm.

Tal's IP practice focuses on patents, trademarks, trade secrets, know-how and copyright litigation primarily for the pharmaceuticals, life sciences, telecommunications and consumer products sectors. Tal also provides ongoing legal counsel on regulatory matters, commercial transactions and other issues of specific interest to the life sciences industry. He has particular expertise in complex, multi-jurisdictional disputes and works in close coordination with leading IP litigators in the US, the UK and other jurisdictions.

Tal was recently ranked by PLC – Which Lawyer? and by Chambers Global as a leader in the field of intellectual property, as well as by European Legal 500, European Legal Experts, Who's Who in IP, Managing Intellectual Property, IFLR 1000 and the World's Leading Patent Experts. He was recently awarded the Client Choice Award for 2010 by the International Law Office. Tal has represented international corporations with global markets, domestic companies with global operations, innovative start-ups and major research and development institutions before the entire range of Israeli civil courts, the Patents and Trademarks Office, arbitrators and various legislative bodies in precedent-setting cases that have significantly influenced Israel's patent and trademark laws.

Tal has been invited by Israel's major university and college law faculties to lecture on IP issues and has spoken on a variety of IP topics in various international professional meetings and seminars.

Tal served as a member of government committees established to review and propose amendments to the patent and trademark laws in Israel, and was extensively involved in the drafting of Israeli patent legislation, particularly in the area of pharmaceutical law, including the legislation that implemented the TRIPS (Trade-Related aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) Convention in Israeli law.

Tal is also active in the following international IP organisations: since 2004 he has served as president of the Israel chapter of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (AIPPI), and as secretary for the Israel chapter during 1998–2004; he is the chairperson of AIPPI's international membership committee; and from 1997–2001 Tal served as chair of the intellectual property committee of Lex Mundi, an international organisation of leading law firms in more than 150 countries. Tal is also a member of the International Trade Mark Association, ECTA and of ALAI.

In addition, Tal is a contributor to practitioner and international IP reference books, including the respective Israel chapters in Patent Claim Interpretation: Global Edition (Thomson Reuters/West Services 2009-2010); International Intellectual Property Litigation (FT); and Intellectual Property World Desk Reference (Kluwer Law International).
