José Gabriel Assis de Almeida is a lawyer qualified under Brazilian law and has been admitted to practise law in Brazil since 1984. He became member of the Brazilian Bar - Rio de Janeiro section in 1984 and of São Paulo section in 1994. He has also been admitted to the Portuguese Bar since 1987 and was admitted to the Paris Bar from 1997 until 2005.

He obtained his law degree at Universidade Candido Mendes, Rio de Janeiro in 1984. In 1987 he obtained the diplôme d'études approffondies at Université Panthéon Sorbonne - Paris I and in 1994 obtained a doctorat en Droit (equivalent to the PhD) at Université Panthéon Assas - Paris II with the mention "Très honorable avec les félicitations du Jury", the highest honour possible.

He has written a book and several articles on aviation law, including: "Brazilian Jurisprudence on Air Transportation", "The Impact of Montreal Convention 1999 on Brazilian Rules Applicable to International Air Transportation", "Air Transportation Contracts and the new Civil Code" and "The Rules Applicable to International Air Transportation".

José Gabriel Assis de Almeida is a Law professor at UERJ State University of Rio de Janeiro and at Uni-Rio Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He was visiting professor at Université Panthéon Assas - Paris II, Université Paris X - Nanterre and Université de Toulouse I.

José Gabriel Assis de Almeida has been practising aviation law since 1984 and teaching air law since 1986 and has a significant experience in litigating aviation cases as well as an extensive experience with regulatory and contractual aviation legal issues. He is currently the senior partner with the law firm J G Assis de Almeida and Associates, in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo).
