Biography: Trademarks

Toni Polson Ashton was called to the Ontario Bar in 1975. She is a senior partner, having practised with the firm since 1976 in intellectual property law, with particular concentration on all aspects of trademark and related law.

Her practice encompasses counselling clients in the selection and availability of trademarks, portfolio management, prosecution, policing of trademarks, opposition and related licensing and packaging issues.

Toni's commitment to trademark law and its evolution has led to her serving as chair of the national intellectual property section of the Canadian Bar Association (1992-1993), and on the International Trademark Association (INTA) board of directors (1995-1997) and its executive committee (1996-1997), steering council, legislative analysis, meeting, international and geographical indications committees. She is currently on the University of Akron School of Law IP advisory committee.

She has been a speaker at the Law Society of Upper Canada and for private and professional organisations within and outside Canada. She is an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School.

Toni co-authors Hughes on Trademarks and Trademarks: Canadian Forms & Precedents, and has contributed to Essential Commercial Law Precedents (Butterworths, Canada).

Toni Ashton is a fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada; a member of the Canadian Bar Association (Ontario) and national section on intellectual property law; Metropolitan Toronto Lawyers Association; FICPI; IPSKI; Phi Delta Phi; Toronto Board of Trade and a special member of Marques.
