Amanda Armstrong heads Werksmans Attorneys' media and communications practice.

She acts for a wide range of clients within this sector, including commercial broadcasting services, broadcasting signal distributors, electronic communications services and network providers. She regularly represents clients before Parliament, the regulator responsible for the broadcasting and electronic communications sector, the competition authorities, the advertising authorities and the civil courts.

Her knowledge of regulatory communications law extends beyond South Africa to other jurisdictions in Africa, Europe, North America and Australia, as well as certain developing countries. Amanda also has significant experience in related areas of law including constitutional, administrative and competition law.

Most recently she has focused on advising clients in relation to: the transition to digital terrestrial television; mobile broadcasting; the licensing and regulation of spectrum; merger notifications to and prohibited practices complaints before the competition authorities; and the legislative and regulatory requirements necessary for the development of astronomy in South Africa.

Amanda has consistently been recognised in international ratings as one of South Africa's foremost media and communications lawyers. In the early 1990s, she chaired the committee that drafted the first statute to provide for the independent regulation of broadcasting in South Africa.

Other achievements include being named as a leading lawyer in media by Best Lawyers International; in media & broadcasting by Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers for Business; in regulatory communications and in internet, e-commerce & data protection by Who's Who Legal and in telecommunications by PLC Which Lawyer.

Amanda holds BA, BA Hons and LLB degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand.
