Biography: Trade & Customs

With 30 years of experience in international trade law, Jeanne Archibald is a director of Hogan & Hartson's 50-member international trade practice. Her practice incorporates all aspects of trade policy, regulatory and legislative issues.

Ms Archibald provides strategic trade policy advice to large, multinational companies and represents clients on a wide variety of matters, including national security reviews of inward direct investment, anti-money laundering enforcement actions, trade sanctions, international trade negotiations and dispute settlement.

Ms Archibald formerly served as general counsel of the US Department of the Treasury, where she provided legal and policy advice to the treasury secretary and senior officials on a full range of trade and economic affairs issues. She participated in the negotiation and drafting of the US-Canada Free Trade Agreement; provided advice on NAFTA negotiations; assisted in drafting provisions of the 1988 Trade Act; advised the Treasury regarding numerous economic sanctions programmes; supervised the drafting of major bank reform legislation; and provided assistance in the implementation of the savings and loan clean-up.

Before joining the Treasury, Ms Archibald served in the office of the US Trade Representative where she supervised proceedings under section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and conducted international litigation and negotiations under the GATT. Ms Archibald also served on the staff of the ways & means committee of the US House of Representatives where she advised members on anti-dumping, countervailing duty and import relief laws.
