Ricardo M Arango became a partner of Arias Fabrega & Fabrega in 1995. He is a member of the firm's executive committee and heads its capital markets and banking team. Mr Arango practises in the areas of capital markets, banking and M&As.

Recent transactions include stock merger between Banco General and Banco Continental, resulting in the largest Panama-owned bank; the US$897 million public tender offer of Banagrícola's stock by Bancolombia; the US$180 million financing of the construction of a coastal highway by Norberto Odebrecht; the US$100 million secured notes issue of Panama Canal Railway; the US$220 million notes offering to finance the construction of Trump Ocean Club Hotel & Tower; the US$362 million initial public offering of Copa Holdings on the NYSE; the US$300 million notes issue of AES Panama; the US$100 million notes issue of Elektra Noreste; the US$120 million notes issue of Banco de Crédito del Perú; and the US$150 million toll-road securitisation of ICA Panamá.

Mr Arango is secretary of the board of the Banco Latinoamericano de Exportaciones, chairman of the Panama Stock Exchange, and director of Corporacón La Prensa. From 1997 to 1999, he headed the presidential commission that drafted Panama's 1999 Securities Act.

Mr Arango completed his LLB at the University of Panama (1983), his LLM at Harvard Law School (1984), and an LLM at Yale Law School (1985). He was a Fulbright Scholar. He worked for White & Case from 1985 to 1987. He is a member of the New York and Panama Bars.

Recent transactions include the US$362 million initial public offering of Copa Holdings on the NYSE; US$300 million note issue of AES Panama; US$100 million note issue of Elektra Noreste; US$120 million note issue of Banco del Crédito de Perú; US$125 million remittance securitisation of Banco Cuscatlán; US$150 million toll-road securitisation of ICA Panamá; US$125 million commercial paper programme of Banco Continental de Panamá; $170 million note issue of Fortuna; US$1.3 billion exchange offer of the Republic of Panama; US$800 million public tender offer of Bancolombia for Banagricola; and the merger of Banco General and Banco Continental.

Ricardo M Arango has been with Arias Fábrega & Fábrega since 1987, and became a partner in 1995. He is a member of the firm's executive committee and heads its capital markets and banking team. Mr Arango practises in the areas of M&A and capital markets.

Recent M&A transactions include: representing Banco General in its stock-merger with Banco Continental de Panama, resulting in the largest Panamanian-owned bank, with assets in excess of US$7 billion; Corporacón UBC International in the sale of its Banco Cuscatlán operations in Central America to Citibank for US$1.5 billion; and Bancolombia in its public tender offer for the acquisition of Banagricola for US$900 million. He also structured the reorganisation of Aseguradora Mundial and Banco Panameño de la Vivienda; and represented Multi Holding Corporation in the US$832 million sale of its interests in BellSouth Panama and Guatemala.

Under his direction, the firm has participated in almost all major M&A transactions in Panama. Some landmark transactions in which the firm has participated include the US$3.6 billion sale of Panamco to Coca-Cola Femsa and the merger between Telemetro and RPC to create Medcom, the largest multimedia (TV, cable, internet and phone) operator in Panama. In 2007, the firm also handled the US$700 million acquisition of the McDonald's operations in Latin America, which won the 2007 M&A Deal of the Year Award by Latin Lawyer.
