He studied at the Chilean Catholic University. Mr Amenábar was chairman, and is president of honour, of the Inter-American Association of Industrial Property. He was chairman of the Chilean Association of Industrial Property, the Chilean Group of the AIPPI. He is a frequent author and his recent papers include: 'Analysis of the International System of Administration and Protection of Industrial Property from a Latin-American Perspective', 'The PCT and its Application in American Countries', 'Critical Analysis of the Patent Law', 'Observance of Intellectual Property Rights on TRIPS and WIPO's Treaties", 'Weakness and Strength of Intellectual Property in Latin America", "The Ethics and the Professionals of Intellectual Property", 'Whither the International Patent System?', 'Business Secrets and Protection of Proof Evidence' and 'Protection of the Chilean Pisco Indication of Origin'.
Mr Amenábar was a member of the Chilean Association committee, which discussed the amendment of the current Chilean Industrial Property Law with the authorities. He also represented the Chilean Association before the National Congress in the debate regarding the Free Trade Agreement with the European Union and the United States. He teaches intellectual property in the magister course of corporate law in the Chilean Catholic University and Gabriela Mistral University and is responsible for the industrial designs and layout of the integrated circuits module of the industrial property course in the Finis Terrae University.
