Biography: Shipping & Maritime

José M Alcántara is a senior partner in the firm. His practice embraces shipping, commercial, insurance and arbitration matters. Jose was the founder of the firm Abogados Marítimos y Asociados, which later became AMYA Abogados.

He is executive councillor of the Comité Maritime International (CMI); titulary member and past president of the Iberoamerican Institute of Maritime Law; past president of the Spanish Maritime Law Association; average adjustor and member of the ICC and of IMMTA; and founder of the international research group MARLAW.

He has an important arbitration practice and is arbitrator-member of various international panels including CEA (Madrid), ICC (Paris), Chambre Arbitrale Maritime (Monaco), CMAC (China), SIAC (Singapore), MMAA (Geneva), LMAA (London), Regional Centre for Commercial Arbitration (Cairo), CEAMAR (Montevideo) and GGC (Bahrein). He is founder and current president of the International Maritime Mediation and Conciliation (IMCAM) Panel, London.

He is lecturer on maritime law in Madrid and Barcelona and has spoken at 191 international conferences and seminars to date.

José was born in Malaga (Spain), studied law and politics in Madrid and shipping law in London. He has been in the legal practice since 1974, and has published numerous articles in the main international shipping magazines.
