Mr Aalto-Setälä was born in 1969. He obtained an LLM degree from the University of Turku in 1994 and has been a member of the Finnish Bar since 1999.
Mr Aalto-Setälä advises companies and governmental agencies on national and EC competition and marketing law issues, including merger control, abuse of dominant position, cartels, state aid and public procurement. He also litigates on a regular basis before the Finnish Market Court and the European Commission. Ilkka Aalto-Setälä has also acted as an arbitrator in private enforcement matters.
Before joining Borenius & Kemppinen, he was a local partner at the Helsinki office of an international law firm, as well as the head of its competition law practice. He has also worked for the merger task force of the European Commission.
Mr Aalto-Setälä has been a co-author, inter alia, of the following books: Kilpailulait ja julkiset hankinnat (Competition Law and the Law on Public Procurement, Business Books, 2008); Yrityksen ja yhteisön vastuuriskit (Risk Management, Business Books, 2002) and Yritys Eurooppalaisessa oikeusyhteisössä Kilpailunrajoituslain mu-kainen vahingonkorvausvelvollisuus (Private Enforcement of Competition Law in Fin-land, University of Turku, 2002).
Ilkka Aalto-Setälä's working languages are Finnish, English and Swedish. In addition to the Finnish Bar Association, Mr Aalto-Setälä is a member of ICC Finland expert group on competition policy and sits on the board of the Finnish Society for Competition Law.
