Activity levels at the time of writing in the UK M&A market are substantially down, both in volume and value terms, over the equivalent time last year.
While global M&A markets have been negatively affected by the crisis in the financial markets, there is a worldwide debate about the role of hedge funds and sovereign wealth funds and whether and how their activities should be made more transparent and subject to tighter regulation.
In 2005, I boldly awarded the title of “The Most Significant M&A Lawyer in the United States” to Delaware vicechancellor Leo Strine. On this occasion, I will pursue a more controversial title: “The Most
Controversial M&A Lawyer in the United States”, and I bestow it on Professor Lucian A Bebchuk, from the Harvard Law School.
Florida benefits from the high levels of M&A activity in the US in general, and also acts as a hub for cross-border transactions in Latin America. This results in raised levels of corporate activity and transactional work, and as such local commercial firms are particularly strong in this area. Our research has identified 24 practitioners, from 12 leading outfits, who stand out in this field.
As previous chapters have mentioned, Singapore is an important regional hub in many fields. The situation is no different in the oil and gas sector – several of the lawyers we identify here are active in nearby countries, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,Thailand, and Vietnam. Our research also indicates that the large international players dominate the market, with practitioners from UK, US and Australian firms all appearing in this chapter.
California’s economy is one of the largest in the world, let alone the United States, and as a result high levels of corporate activity and transactional work pass through and derive from San Francisco, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley, and other places in the state. As such, there are particularly high levels of transactional legal expertise in the local commercial firms, and the research has identified 28 practitioners from 15 leading practices who stand out.
A major hub for business in the south of the United States, Atlanta is home to several major international companies, including four Fortune 100 businesses. With the vigorous private equity market driving an ever increasing volume of transactional work, we identify 28 leaders in this field.
