Over the past 10 years business has had to adapt to the proliferation of competition laws worldwide. Now, more than 100 jurisdictions enforce competition laws, with others following suit.
Advice on competition law continues to be a growing area of legal services, to judge from the latest round of our research.
In this chapter we highlight the leading individuals in Argentina for counselling and litigating on behalf of clients on competition matters relating to mergers and acquisitions, monopolisation and cartels.
We identify 28 individuals from 14 firms in recognition of their antitrust practices in dealings with the regulators and before the courts.
Our research indicates that Illinois is not short of high-quality antitrust lawyers with multiple firms having built up exceptionally strong teams in the state.
As one might expect, the scope for competition law is smaller in Florida than it would be in New York or Washington, DC, for example. However, our research has uncovered ten individuals from eight firms, all with an excellent reputation for competition-related work. The selected individuals counsel and litigate on behalf of a diverse client base on matters including the laws concerning cartels, monopolisation and mergers, and in some cases all three.
The practice of competition law in Singapore is relatively new. The Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) was established under the Competition Act on 1 January 2005 and the new merger regime only came into force on 1 July 2007, allowing parties to notify the commission of any proposed merger and to receive a decision as to whether it would infringe section 54 of the Competition Act. A consequence of the relative infancy of the competition regime is a small pool of firms and individuals practising in the area. While firms wait to see the levels of enforcement they will encounter, there are few lawyers dedicating 100 per cent of their time to competition matters.
The research for this chapter has unearthed great competition expertise within California. In total we identify 28 individuals from 19 firms who earned the highest of praise from both clients and peers. San Francisco houses the Federal Trade Commission’s western field office and the city is home to over half the nominees. We have also uncovered leading lights in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley, all of whom contribute to a burgeoning practice in the state.
Our research has uncovered 16 competition experts from 10 firms within the state of Georgia. While one may focus on the laws concerning cartels others may devote much of their time to monopolisation or mergers, and others still combine all three.
