In the 24 years since it opened, González Calvillo SC has formed a notable reputation in the franchise, IP, real estate and M&A markets. The firm provides full business services to publicly listed companies and private international entities, as well as Mexican government agencies. This year we feature 17 listings across 10 practice areas – an increase of three chapters and three lawyer listings over the previous edition.
The firm has four lawyers in the franchise chapter: its best represented practice area in the edition. Alfredo Chávez Goyeneche is highly praised for his ability to “combine business and legal knowledge”, and Pablo Hooper Ramírez, a licensing, franchise and IP lawyer, counsels the Mexican government on the development of national regulations. Head of franchise and distribution Jorge Mondragón is a “prominent” franchise lawyer and is famed for his senior vice-chairmanship of the franchise committee of the IBA. He advises on, drafts and negotiates licensing contracts and assists on implementing franchise and distribution schemes. The founding partner of the firm Enrique González Calvillo enjoys a listing in the franchise chapter for his work in licensing and the arbitration and litigation chapters for his “strong dispute practice”, and has taken part in some major claims, including Grupo Modelo’s claim for damages against its parent company Anheuser-Busch. In the M&A chapter he is “highly renowned” as a corporate lawyer and has worked with Bradesco bank, among others.
Also in the M&A chapter is José Victor Torres Gómez, who is “highly regarded” by clients and peers. He has been involved in major workouts for entities such as PEMEX, GICSA and Qualcomm. He is joined by Jorge Cervantes Trejo who also enjoys multiple listings this year. He is a “rainmaker” in the M&A field and represents international clients on corporate finance, mergers and joint ventures. He is also praised and features in the real estate and project finance chapters for his advice in commercial property financing and strategic development. He earns his fourth listing in the communications, internet & e-commerce section. He is a “very good telecoms lawyer, with many years practising in the field”.
Alongside Trejo in the real estate and construction chapter is Gonzalo Vargas Ateca, a lawyer lauded for his experience advising on multi-million dollar infrastructure projects, investments and acquisitions in the commercial real estate market. He is an expert in Mexican real estate law and how it relates to foreign entities.
Two leading environment lawyers feature this year. According to a source, Leopoldo Burguete-Stanek is “one of the three lawyers that initiated environmental law in Mexico… he is a very big player in the market”. He advises on water rights, and related tax and administrative issues. Guillermo Barragán is an “impressive practitioner” in the environment and climate change arena.
The capital markets chapter features Jaime Cortés Álvarez, a bonds specialist who has been involved in major deals, such as the offering of one of Mexico’s largest homebuilders, Urbi, worth US$150 million.
