FRASER MILNER CASGRAIN LLP

One of Canada’s oldest law firms, Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP began life in 1839 in Toronto. The firm merged in 2000 to become Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP and now has over 500 lawyers in offices in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. The firm is committed to providing clients with high quality, innovative solutions and the success of this strategy is demonstrated by our research: the firm receives 24 listings across 14 chapters and has particularly strong showings in the insolvency and restructuring, mining and oil and gas chapters.

The firm’s insolvency and restructuring team prides itself on being able to advise clients across all of Canada’s provinces and co-chairs of the national practice group, David Mann and Shayne Kukulowicz are “highly respected” in this field. Mann is Calgary chair of the insolvency and restructuring group and his notable cases include acting for Air Canada and Enron. Kukulowicz is a “leading litigator” with a practice that focuses exclusively on insolvency and related commercial litigation.

Fraser Milner is significantly noted in our research for its mining and oil and gas practices and four lawyers are fielded in each of the corresponding chapters. Brian Abraham is national co-chair of the firm’s mining group and his expertise covers all areas from exploration, development and production to reclamation, representing both national and international companies. In the oil and gas chapter, Michael Hurst is “highly praised” by peers and clients for his vast knowledge and he recently acted as project leader on BP Canada Energy’s $3.25 billion sale of upstream natural gas assets to Apache Canada. William Jenkins stands out for his “outstanding” counsel and is further recognised in capital markets and project finance.

The firm is praised for its “high quality” litigation and dispute resolution practice and John McDougall QC is a “top name” and features in the arbitration and commercial litigation listings.

Further recognition is earned in the franchise chapter, featuring the chair of the firm’s national franchise and distribution group, Stéphane Teasdale, a “leading lawyer” with over 20 years experience in the area.

Our research finds Fraser Milner to be a truly pioneering commercial firm committed to offering excellent advice across a variety of sectors.
