MATTOS FILHO VEIGA FILHO MARREY JR E QUIROGA ADVOGADOS

Starting as a boutique law office in 1992 Mattos Filho Veiga Filho Marrey Jr e Quiroga Advogados has grown to cover 23 practice areas and employ 250 law professionals. The firm has a corporate focus but also provides civil expertise. We list 18 lawyers across nine of those practice areas.

The corporate governance and M&A practice areas feature prominently in this edition. Traditional corporate work is what the firm is well known and praised for. Three lawyers are renowned for their M&A and governance work and feature in both those chapters. João Ricardo de Azevedo Ribeiro is very active in the M&A arena advising clients on all aspects of takeovers, including financing, internal restructuring and regulatory compliance. Moacir Zilbovicius has a “formidable reputation” for his creativity and problem-solving.

Sergio Spinelli Silva Jr is a “talented lawyer” who combines M&A experience with his complex financing know-how. He has acted for Petrobras, Marias Lojas and LPS and enjoys a third listing in the capital markets chapter. Alongside him in that chapter is José Eduardo Carneiro Queiroz, a “prominent markets specialist” who primarily works on equity raising and IPOs. He counts Telemar and Aliansce as clients. Queiroz also has a notable presence in the banking chapter, gained from advising financial institutions on crisis management and regulatory compliance. Also in the banking chapter is the “legendry” Ary Oswaldo Mattos Filho, a founding partner of the firm.

Tax is another practice area that the firm excels in. Since 2010, the tax contingent in the firm has grown in number and now boasts a comprehensive tax service including litigators, regulatory lawyers, tax strategists and administrative experts. Managing partner, Roberto Quiroga Mosquera is a “legend” in this field and is an ambassador for the firm. He is joined by Luiz Felipe Centeno Ferraz, a relatively new addition to the partnership who is well known in tax circles for his “solid” advice.

The firm’s competition practice is represented by Amadeu Carvalhaes Ribeiro and the “impressive” Lauro Celidonio Gomes dos Reis Neto. Ribeiro is a new addition to the firm, having joined in 2010. He is an experienced antitrust lawyer and earned numerous recommendations in this year’s research.

Launched in 2009, the firm’s insurance and reinsurance practice group has been involved in some major domestic deals under the leadership of Marcelo Mansur Haddad. Haddad is an expert in this field and has played a role in attracting clients such as OdontoPrev and Swiss Re to the firm, along with Amadeu Carvalhaes Ribeiro.

The firm features one lawyer each in the insolvency and arbitration sections. Eduardo Secchi Munhoz is a “recommended” insolvency lawyer who has helped numerous companies through the restructuring process. Hired in 2010, Eduardo Damião Gonçalves has a growing reputation as a “young, bright” lawyer and is considered to have a future as “a top arbitration” specialist.
