Editorial: Competition

Advice on competition law continues to be a growing area of legal services, to judge from the latest round of our research.

Editorial: Mining

With the continuing turmoil in the financial markets and the relative weakness of the US dollar, the price of precious metals continues to reach record high levels, with gold prices increasing by 30 per cent in 2007 and platinum, palladium and silver also rising sharply. With such potential rewards on offer, this continues to prompt similarly elevated levels of activity in the mining sector across the world. Our research has identified 235 individuals in 37 countries who have demonstrated the highest levels of expertise in this vibrant area.

Editorial: Private Funds

Despite 2007’s credit crunch, the funds area remains vibrant. Who’s Who Legal’s analysis of the private funds area confirms the continuing dominance of the London and New York markets in this field and we note a trend towards international expansion among many of the most established firms. A significant number of US firms have made the acquisition of UK talent a priority and many of America’s stalwarts are also looking still further afield; rapid market growth is reflected in the increased representation in areas such as Hong Kong and India – both currently enjoying an injection of capital – while long-standing funds centres such as the Cayman Islands maintain solid positions in our rankings.

Editorial: Trade & Customs

This chapter highlights the strength of the profession in this area, 172 individuals from 20 countries make the grade, the majority of these, unsurprisingly, practise in Washington, DC and Brussels.

Editorial: Construction in Florida

Despite recent turbulent times and uncertainty about the US mortgage market, construction remains a major industry in Florida. Our research identifies 26 lawyers from 17 firms who have proven levels of expertise representing a range of clients in the industry, including owners, contractors and subcontractors, in both contentious and non-contentious matters.

Editorial: Competition in Florida

As one might expect, the scope for competition law is smaller in Florida than it would be in New York or Washington, DC, for example. However, our research has uncovered ten individuals from eight firms, all with an excellent reputation for competition-related work. The selected individuals counsel and litigate on behalf of a diverse client base on matters including the laws concerning cartels, monopolisation and mergers, and in some cases all three.

Editorial: Commercial Litigation in Florida

Litigation is big business in Florida and the state has produced many fine lawyers both as part of large firms and in focused boutiques. Greenberg Traurig LLP is the best represented firm, with five lawyers listed. This international firm’s worldwide links, deep bench strength and statewide coverage mean that the litigation department works like “a well-oiled machine”.
