King & Spalding launches in Singapore with energy and arbitration hires

King & Spalding LLP has expanded its Asia arbitration practice with the hire of John Savage, who joins from Shearman & Sterling LLP.

Savage will help set up the Singapore office where he will be joined by global energy practice co-head Phillip Weems, who has previously worked in the Dubai office, and energy and project finance partner Daniel Rogers from Houston.

Most recently, Savage served as vice chair of international arbitration and headed Shearman & Sterling’s Asia disputes practice.

An expert in international commercial arbitration, Savage has worked extensively in Asia and the Middle East and has experience across a range of sectors, including energy and chemicals, as well as with large construction and infrastructure disputes. He also has substantial investment treaty arbitration experience.

“John Savage is recognised as one of the leading arbitration practitioners in Asia, and his deep roots in Singapore and the region add another critical dimension to our global commercial disputes practice,” says Robert Hays Jr, King & Spalding’s chairman.

“I am excited to be joining King & Spalding’s team of outstanding international arbitration lawyers and look forward to contributing to the continued growth of its commercial arbitration work. The firm’s culture of high performance and collegiality are especially appealing and make King & Spalding an extremely good fit for me,” says Savage.

The Singapore office will be the eighth office outside the United States opened by King & Spalding LLP and will serve as the regional hub for energy and international arbitration.

Speaking on the move Emmanuel Gaillard head of Shearman & Sterling’s international arbitration practice says: “John is a superb lawyer and will do well wherever he is.”

Savage features in The International Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitration Lawyers.
