In these increasingly difficult economic times, the number and size of corporate deals in California may not match those of recent years, but there remains a steady flow of work and a residual - and extremely elevated - level of corporate legal expertise in the state's leading firms. Twenty-six practitioners emerge from the research as leaders in the field.

However, the diversity of the clients and industries represented by these professionals shows the vibrancy of this discipline in the legal marketplace.

In California many corporate lawyers are choosing to focus more of their time in this area - particularly in restructuring. The specialists we spoke to said this has been a particularly busy year, with all signs pointing to even higher levels of activity in 2009.

Despite the tough economic environment, which has resulted in a string of law firm mergers and department lateral hires, California trademarks firms are performing well. Our interviewees put this down to the continuing buoyancy of the IP market, especially in the areas of internet and medical trademarks work. An increase in activity is also noted in the IP fraud area - lawyers are increasingly busy working out strategies to avoid litigation in this area, according to sources. Forty-nine lawyers appear in this chapter, making it one of the largest in the edition - another indication of the continuing demand for IP counsel.
