Mexico: Banking

Mexico’s banking sector has proven its resilience, with high capitalisation and areas showing growth such as the credit market and wealth management for high net worth individuals. In this rapidly developing field we select 30 leading individuals who look set to see increasingly diverse work over the next few years.

At Ritch Mueller SC, five lawyers feature prominently in our research. Luis A Nicolau is heavily involved in banking regulatory matters and participated in the committee that assisted in drafting the Securities Market law. Federico Santacruz is “greatly respected” for his banking expertise and Rodrigo Conesa Labastida is “well known” for his real estate financing practice, through which he represents lenders and developers, and for his involvement in forums related to the drafting of the upcoming real estate investment trust legislative reform. Ricardo Calderón focuses his practice on cross border financing transactions and is “well versed” in the financing of infrastructure projects in Mexico. Gabriel del Valle Mendiola represents domestic and international financial institutions and borrowers in a range of transactions including secured and unsecured loans and project financings.

Galicia Abogados SC also achieves an “impressive” five listings. Arturo Perdomo is one of the “most highly regarded” lawyers in the field and his expertise covers a range of financing transactions, including the acquisition of Mexican financial entities. Manuel Galicia represents banks and other financial institutions in credit facilities, private placements, lease financings, restructurings, and project financing. Carlos de Maria y Campos S focuses his practice on banking and financial law and is “excellent” and Alejandro de la Borbolla O is a “top tier” banking lawyer. José Visoso has represented some of the major international financing institutions in Mexico and has acted in numerous acquisitions of Mexican financial entities by foreign investors.

Michell Nader Schekaiban of recently formed Nader Hayaux y Goebel SC is a “prominent figure” in the banking sector and has represented bank syndicates in some of the largest debt restructurings in Mexico. With his industry expertise gained from working in-house at Banobras SNC, Javier Arreola Espinosa is a “great talent” with an additional niche practice representing financial institutions in aircraft financing and leasing. Yves Hayaux-du-Tilly is best known for his financing “finesse” and his clients include multinational companies and foreign investors. Hans Goebel Caviedes is “highly knowledgeable” in the field of banking regulations and he is considered an “expert” in complex structured finance deals. Julian Garza Castañeda specialises in development capital certificates as well as being proficient in a range of finance transactions.

Three names feature from Mijares Angoitia Cortés y Fuentes SC. José Raz-Guzmán represents both lenders and borrowers in financing transactions and is “first class” according to our research. Ricardo Maldonado-Yáñez regularly advises on complex financings and his clients include both domestic and international financial institutions. Manuel Echave Pintado is a “superb” advisor to financial institutions and has worked on the design and implementation of structured finance schemes.

Carlos Aiza at Creel García-Cuéllar Aiza y Enríquez SC is a “sharp and intelligent” lawyer and he recently advised Casa de Bolsa BBVA Bancomer when the real estate arm of Prudential Financial created its third Mexican real estate fund and raised US$293 million.

Rafael Robles Miaja of Robles Miaja Abogados is a “first class” banking lawyer with an impressive client list including Santander among other national and international banks.

At Haynes and Boone SC, Antonio Franck has an “excellent market profile” and his recent work includes advising Bank of America when Santander bought back its stake in Grupo Financiero Santander.

Based in Mexico City, Fernando de Ovando at Jones Day leads the banking and finance practice and has a “high profile” in the legal market for his work on cross-border transactions.

Diego Martínez Rueda-Chapital at Cervantes Sainz SC focuses on structured financings, secured and unsecured lending transactions and work outs.

At Bufete Labastida SC, Jorge Labastida Martínez is “well regarded” for his banking expertise and is “as good as they come” according to one source.
