Mexico: Intellectual Property

The increasing cultural awareness of the importance of protecting intellectual property rights in Mexico over the last 10 years has lead to an astonishing level of growth in the volume of work in this practice area for trademark, patent and litigation lawyers. In this chapter we recognise 28 leading individuals.

Five lawyers are selected for inclusion at Uhthoff Gómez Vega & Uhthoff SC, demonstrating the firm’s strength in this field. Manuel Soto specialises in trademarks and is “superb” according to his peers. Javier Uhthoff-Orive is “vastly knowledgeable” in the field of patents law, while Mario Ponce Walraven is “highly recommended” for licensing and copyrights. Marcela Bolland Gonzalez is considered a “brilliant litigator” and Robert Young Meier is also known for his “high-quality” disputes skills.

Arochi Marroquín & Lindner SC fields four lawyers. Roberto Arochi is a “highly skilled” practitioner with extensive experience covering trademark and copyright counselling, litigation and enforcement and protection of IP rights. Hedwig Lindner is head of the firm’s patent litigation practice and is a “great talent”. Head of the intellectual property rights enforcement department Mike Margáin is an “exceptional litigator” and internationally renowned for his expertise. Jorge Mier y Concha heads the patent department and specialises in patent and copyright filing and litigation.

At Basham Ringe y Correa SC, four lawyers make an appearance in the following pages, among them Martín Michaus who “excels” in licensing and ownership of names. Eduardo Kleinberg focuses on IP matters related to franchise and Adolfo Athié Cervantes is “very active” in the protection of IP rights before federal courts. Jose Hinojosa Cuellar has a broad IP practice that covers trademarks, patents, copyrights, licences and litigation.

Three names appear from Müggenburg Gorches Peñalosa y Sepúlveda SC. Carlos Müggenburg is “well versed” in representing multinational companies before the Mexican government authorities in relation to the protection of IP rights. Jean-Yves Peñalosa Sol La Lande and Esteban Gorches G are co-heads of the firm’s IP practice. Peñalosa Sol La Lande has experience representing companies in relation of registration and protection of IP rights and the negotiation of technology transfer and Gorches is “rated very highly”.

Olivares & Cía is similarly well represented. Antonio Belaunzarán is “internationally renowned” for his trademark litigation practice. Alejandro Luna has seen success at the Federal and Supreme Court level for his copyright work and is involved in a proposal to modify the system of litigation and enforcement of intellectual property rights in Mexico. Sergio Olivares Jr is an “esteemed” lawyer with an emphasis on trademark litigation and prosecution.

Enrique A Diaz at Goodrich Riquelme y Asociados is described as “one of the best” in our research, receiving high acclaim for his work in patent and trademark licensing, protection and litigation as well as both national and international copyright laws.

Mariano Soní of IP-focused firm Bufete Soní is “well known” in the national market for his expertise in the protection of IP rights.

Alfredo Rangel at Noriega & Escobedo AC receives praise for his “top-tier” advice to clients in relation to patents, trademarks and copyright.

Founding partner Kiyoshi Tsuru Alberu at Tsuru Morales & Tsuru Abogados SC is an “outstanding” practitioner and specialises in drafting, prosecuting and enforcing patents.

Pablo Hooper Ramírez has led González Calvillo SC’s IP department for over six years and he has an established practice advising franchises on their IP rights.

Agustín Velázquez at Avah Legal is noted for his work on trademark, trade secret and copyright law and he leads the firm’s IP team in litigation proceedings.

José Pablo Pérez Zea at Santamarina y Steta SC receives acclaim for his “first-rate” work in IP matters including slogans and copyrights.

With over 50 of years experience, Björn Vadillo, of counsel at Vadillo & Co, is a “long-standing” expert in the sector and is a founder and ex-president of the InterAmerican Association of Intellectual Property.

At Becerril Coca & Becerril SC, founding and senior partner Oscar Becerril is praised for his extensive experience in international prosecution and enforcement of patents, trademarks and copyrights.
