Germany: Mediation

The implementation of the EU Mediation Directive in 2008 highlights the increasing importance of this method of dispute resolution. Part of a European-wide initiative to promote and regulate the development of mediation, the recitals to the directive focus on the cost, speed and overall efficiency of the process. In Germany, mediation is becoming an increasingly popular method of alternative dispute resolution and we list nine leading specialists in this area.

Christian Duve at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP is a “highly regarded” name in the market. He is a member of the firm’s dispute resolution practice group and in his capacity as a mediator has been involved in a broad range of matters, including acting on issues surrounding a large family estate and shareholders disputes.

At Heussen Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH, Renate Dendorfer is based in the firm’s Munich office where she specialises in employment and company and commercial law. With extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution, commercial mediation is a key focus of her practice.

Armin Hutner at Taylor Wessing LLP has a “respected” practice and his particular focus is in the banking and finance sector. A member of the committee for out of court settlement of the German lawyers’ association, he regularly acts as a business mediator.

The “outstanding” Stephan Breidenbach from the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance is a “prominent figure in the industry”. He receives praise for “actively promoting the use of mediation”.

Horst Eidenmüller from the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich is a “distinguished name” and is referred to by contemporaries as a “leader in the field”.

At Baker & McKenzie, Joerg Risse focuses on disputes related to M&A transactions and infrastructure projects. He is frequently appointed as a mediator and recently acted in a price alignment matter, which arose on the back of a major M&A deal.

Horst Zillessen at Mediator GmbH is “first-rate” and is commended for his impressive practice.

At Müller Schupfner & Partner, Peter Müller is recognised for his expertise in relation to disputes arising from trademark and patent matters.

Completing the listing is Andreas Hacke from Zwanzig Hacke Meilke & Partner. He regularly works on solving business conflicts as well as holding talks and seminars on business mediation.
