Canada: Corporate Immigration

Canada has always been an attractive destination for corporate entities: a strong economy, relatively low unemployment, a favourable tax regime and prosperous resource industries means there is no shortage of companies looking to relocate or open offices in the country. In the past year, new legislation and regulatory additions have made the process fairer and more efficient. Lawyers look forward to increased demand for advice on permanent residency applications and protection of the local labour force. We feature 29 lawyers this year.

The founding partners of Gomberg Dalfen, Seth Dalfen and Avi Gomberg feature in this chapter for their “well run” practice and “developed expertise”. Dalfen specialises in relocation to Canada and represents a range of corporate bodies and Gomberg focusses exclusively on foreign and Canadian employment issues.

From Green and Spiegel LLP, four lawyers feature. Stephen Green has extensive experience acting for clients on corporate employee transfers, investor applications and judicial review matters. Shoshana Green has a strong advocacy based practice appearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board and Federal Court of Canada. Evan Green is a US-Canada immigration law specialist and advises on all cross-border matters in this field. Founding partner Mendel Green QC is a “dean” in citizenship and immigration law matters. They are an “established and skilled” set recognised for their expertise in citizenship, family, study permits, resident visa and many more areas.

At human resources law firm Greenberg Turner, Howard Greenberg is the former co-chair of the IBA’s corporate immigration division. He is a “talented” and well-known lawyer. Alongside him is the global practice leader Suzanne de Lint, a regulatory and legislative “authority”.

At Guberman Garson Immigration Lawyers, Joel Guberman advises on North American free trade, treaty investors and traders and other issues concerning skilled worker immigration. His “highly nominated” colleague David Garson is the managing partner of the firm and former chair of the Canada chapter of AILA. Heather Segal is known for her work for US companies relocating into Canada and vice versa.

Norton Rose OR LLP boasts two of the leading practitioners in this field. The “professional” Chantal Arsenault enjoys a strong practice assisting companies on visas, residency and relocation and negotiating political barriers. Yusra Siddiquee advises clients on strategy, immigration due diligence, residency, inadmissibility and permit issuance.

Bennett Jones LLP features Kevin Zemp, a dual Canadian and American practitioner who acts for multinational companies and advises on North American immigration needs. A former immigration officer for the Canadian government, he brings first hand regulatory experience to his practice.

Nan Berezowski at her own firm, Berezowski Business Immigration Law, is well regarded for her advice on relocation, investor mobility and employee family mobility.

Ackah Business Immigration Law is represented by its founder, Evelyn Ackah who advises companies on their immigration strategies and provides expertise on employee mobility and relocation.

At Blaney McMurtry LLP, Henry Chang specialises in North American cross-border relocation for intra-company transferees, treaty traders and treaty investors.

Brian Dingle is a business immigration and citizenship lawyer at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP with a “thriving” career. He acts on behalf of public and private employers on matters relating to entry into and relocation out of Canada.

At his own firm Kenneth Ing is an experienced corporate immigration specialist and a “respected” member of the British Colombia Immigration Bar.

Isabelle Dongier leads the Montreal corporate immigration team at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, where she focusses on assisting companies obtaining permits and visas for their employees, and advises on NAFTA and domestic boundary agreements.

The “renowned” Jacqueline Bart of Jacqueline Bart & Associates is a prolific author in the field and a “respected” practitioner. She advises individuals and corporate entities.

Sergio Karas of Karas & Associates lobbies for changes to the law and regulatory regime in both the US and Canada.

Benjamin Kranc of Kranc Associates Barristers and Solicitors has “in depth knowledge and an acute understanding of the laws governing migration to Canada”. He is “invaluable” according to clients.

At Mamann Frankel Sandaluk LLP, Asher Frankel is “very knowledgeable”, according to peers.

At Maynard & Stojicevic, Gordon Maynard is “very professional and approachable”.

The “reliable and responsive” Dennis McCrea from McCrea & Associates acts as counsel before the Immigration and Refugees Board and the Federal Courts of Canada, earning him a mention in this year’s chapter, as does the “resourceful” Michael Greene from Sherritt Greene.

In Vancouver, Catherine Sas QC is a leading practitioner at Miller Thomson LLP, and advises on migration, citizenship, relocation and study in Canada.

In Winnipeg, Kenneth Zaifman at his own firm is “very very good”. He advises on foreign recruitment and assists individuals in relocation matters.
