Brazil: Insurance & Reinsurance
Insurance and reinsurance is a growth area in Brazil. Currently it accounts for just over 3.5 per cent of the country’s GDP and is expected to reach 8-10 per cent in five years. Lawyers are expanding their knowledge and becoming more sophisticated in their provision of insurance services, which is attracting international interest. This year we see a mix of established firms that have been providing insurance services for over 30 years, and boutique firms who have recently ventured into this area as part of their pensions and capitalisation practices. We feature nine lawyers who are leaders in this field.
At Demarest e Almeida Advogados, João Marcelo Máximo dos Santos is highly regarded by peers and clients for his ability “to give clients the necessary support, especially involving insurance matters”.
At his own firm Ernesto Tzirulnik is “top tier for litigation with a big focus on insurance claims”, according to one interviewee. Similarly, Renato Tadeu Rondina Mandaliti from his own firm provides “satisfying solutions to legal insurance problems” according to one client. Mandaliti consults and litigates and enjoys an international reputation. At his own firm, Antonio Penteado Mendonça is “very accurate in everything he does” according to his peers and Ayrton Pimentel from his own firm is notable for his work in life insurance.
Mattos Filho Veiga Filho Marrey Jr e Quiroga Advogados enjoys two listings in this year’s chapter. Marcelo Mansur Haddad is “very active” and Amadeu Carvalhaes Ribeiro is “one of the good guys” in this field.
Also featuring two lawyers is Pellon & Associados Law Office. Sergio Ruy Barroso de Mello is an insurance and reinsurance lawyer with a specialism in private pensions. As former chief counsel for Companhia Internacional de Seguros, he has “impressive” knowledge and experience in this field and is “very well known in Brazil”. Luís Felipe Pellon has over 30 years experience in this area and has advised international insurers and public entities throughout that time. He is a senior practitioner and academic.
