Brazil: Environment

A conflict exists in the Brazilian economy between the need to expand in sectors such as agriculture and infrastructure projects on one hand, and the need to preserve such internationally important environments as the Amazon rainforest on the other. While the country’s law makers weigh these issues in the senate, the 14 lawyers we feature in this section continue to see their skills and knowledge put to the test.

A number of firms enjoy multiple listings in this chapter, including Pinheiro Neto Advogados, which fields two “excellent” practitioners. Antonio José Loureiro Cerqueira Monteiro is noted for his environmental due diligence work in major transactions and negotiations before the Brazilian public prosecutor and other environmental agencies, as well as his “great” expertise in bio-safety law and administrative disputes. Werner Grau Neto focuses his practice on environmental consulting and litigation, and he was described as a “go-to-guy” for climate change and sustainability advice by sources.

Márcio Monteiro Reis is an expert in the regulatory and administrative law surrounding environmental issues and he represents Siqueira Castro – Advogados along with Sao Paulo environmental team leader Simone Paschoal Nogueira.

At Milaré Advogados, “superb” managing partner Édis Milaré brings extensive experience gained in former roles as head of the São Paulo State Environment Office and chair of the Sao Paulo Forest Conservation and Sustainable Development Foundation to the table for clients. Of counsel Walter José Senise adds his name to the firm’s strong showing here.

At Demarest e Almeida Advogados, Luiz Fernando Henry Sant’Anna is a “first rate advocate”, known and respected among sources for his litigation and arbitration work for local and international clients.

Adriana Mathias Baptista is the partner in charge of the environmental law and sustainability practice group at TozziniFreire Advogados, where she focuses her practice on environmental risk assessment, liability and strategic assistance in major transactions and infrastructure projects, and peers describe her as a “leading light”.

Angela Barbarulo is the managing partner of Econsult Advogados e Consultores Associados and a “great name” in compliance advice, permitting, liability management and auditing according to sources.

Paulo de Bessa Antunes represents Bessa Antunes Advogados and is praised by peers for his “brilliant” environmental practice and infrastructure expertise.

Heloisa Verri Paulino represents Souza Cescon Barrieu & Flesch Advogados where she is lauded for her environmental and consumer law expertise.

Fernanado Tabet is the managing partner of Tabet Advogados and a member of the board of directors at France-Brazil Chamber of Commerce, and sources hail his knowledge of sustainability, renewables and compliance issues as “invaluable”.

The “highly prominent” Oscar Graça Couto ranks highly at Lobo & Ibeas Advogados, while Lefosse Advogados, in cooperation with Linklaters lists the “very well thought of” Paula Chaccur de Cresci.
