ENVIRONMENT
The environment chapter is home to Hunton & Williams’ “remarkable team of knowledgeable people”. In Washington, DC, Andrea Bear Field was praised for her representation of clients such as energy, paper and flexible packaging companies in litigation and Environmental Protection Agency enforcement actions related to the Clean Air Act. Turner Smith heads the international environmental practice and is a “top-drawer individual”. Henry Nickel is “highly visible in the market” and is a recognised authority on the Clean Air Act, the National Environmental Policy Act and Clean Water Act. The “amazing” Virginia Albrecht is renowned for her wetlands-related work, and her expertise on the Endangered Species Act. William Brownell is the fifth nominee from the DC office, and an “essential inclusion on any list of the best”.

David Ledbetter in Virginia co-chairs the Superfund practice group and is “highly regarded” by his peers. Kathy Robb in New York co-heads the firm’s resources, regulatory and environmental law team. “Excellent lawyer” Charles Case completes the firm’s impressive contingent in the chapter.

COMPETITION and trade
Four Hunton & Williams lawyers make it into the competition chapter, three from the Washington, DC, office. Outside of the capital, in Richmond, Virginia, Thomas Slater puts in an excellent performance. Hewitt Pate is the global practice head and benefits from having “had wonderful experience at the DoJ”. Another source admitted that they were “most impressed by him” as he was “very, very thoughtful” and that he “writes exceptionally well and handles himself brilliantly”.

Joining Pate are Bruce Hoffman and Ray Hartwell, both individuals received praise from multiple respondents to our survey. Hartwell is known as “one of the best for representing individuals in cartel cases” while Hoffman is regarded as a “huge up-and-comer at the bar” and a “very good lawyer”. Edmund Sim from Singapore comes highly recommended in the trade and customs research as “one of the leading practitioners in Asia”.

FINANCE & CORPORATE

Co-head of the firm’s asset securitisation group and a member of the global capital markets team, Michael Nedzbala, is one of three entries in the capital markets chapter. He is joined in the Charlotte office by Michael Kerrigan, a practitioner who is “top of the class when it comes to US loan trading attorneys – nobody does it better”. Kevin Buckley in Richmond also received sufficient nominations to feature in this section.

Another senior figure within the firm appears in our corporate tax chapter. George Howell heads the firm’s tax and ERISA practice and was described to researchers as “terrific”. Benjamin Ackerly gives the firm a presence in the insolvency & restructuring chapter, with a strong performance in the firm’s home state of Virginia.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
Other highlights on the following pages include the appearance of two individuals in the management labour and employment chapter. William Keller is widely considered the “dean of labour and employment law in Texas” and Terence Connor is just as well regarded in Florida.

The real estate chapter also boasts two Hunton & Williams practitioners with James Wallenstein praised for his work in development and joint-venture transactions. Wallenstein’s performance in this chapter “deserves recognition”, as does that of the “scholarly” Thomas Kaufman. Allen Goolsby is included in the corporate governance chapter and was described as a “national treasure” by one competitor. Christopher Kuner from the Brussels office heads the international privacy and information management practice and appears in the internet and e-commerce chapter.
