What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Law Firm of the Year – Environment
Hunton & Williams LLP celebrates its 110th birthday this year and secures our environmental law firm of the year award for the second consecutive time. In recent months the firm has advised the likes of Faroe Petroleum and Progress Energy, and received Global Competition Review’s M&A transaction of the year award for the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa region.
A total of 14 Hunton & Williams lawyers are listed in the environment chapter, representing offices in Belgium and across the US. Turner Smith heads the international environment practice and is one of the firm’s nine DC-based lawyers to achieve recognition in this section. An expert in energy and environmental policy, transactional and dispute resolution work, Smith has developed a “world-class” reputation over more than 25 years of specialisation in this discipline. Fellow-DC resident Andrea Bear Field emerges as one of the best regarded names internationally for environmental permitting and enforcement, and sources praised her as a “leading light” for regulatory and disputes work under the US Clean Air Act. David Ledbetter and Kevin Finto represent the firm’s founding office in Richmond and Charles Case comes highly recommended in Raleigh. Lucas Bergkamp in Brussels is lauded for his chemical, energy, waste regulatory and health care expertise as well as his “excellent” knowledge of EU law.
Four lawyers represent the firm in the competition chapter. Bruce Hoffman heads the global competition practice and is noted by peers for his “cutting edge” merger review, government investigation and antitrust litigation work for the likes of Delta Air Lines and Owens & Minor. The “brilliant” Ray Hartwell joins Hoffman in the US capital, while Thomas Slater in Richmond and Michael Rosenthal in Brussels are similarly “highly rated”.
Hunton & Williams also distinguishes itself in the corporate and financial services spheres. Three of the firm’s Charlotte-based lawyers rank highly in the capital markets chapter, including co-head of asset securitisation Michael Nedzbala and co-head of derivatives Joseph Buonanno. Richmond residents Allen Goolsby and George Howell are both hailed as “excellent corporate lawyers” and appear in our corporate governance and tax sections respectively. The firm’s insurance and insolvency teams also field representatives in the following pages.
Dispute resolution emerges as another strong suit, with Hunton & Williams lawyers appearing in the business crime defence, litigation and product liability defence chapters. Additional recognition in the internet and e-commerce, management labour and employment and real estate sections further attests to the firm’s “exceptional” global profile.
