Both firms have wide range of experience spanning over a century, and the merger of these two highly reputable firms has lead to the creation of a top 10 global law firm. A former recipient of our Insurance and Reinsurance Law Firm of the Year award, Hogan Lovells fields total of eight lawyers from offices in Rome, Düsseldorf and London. John Young is co-chair of the firm and heads the corporate insurance practice in London, and his practice focuses on transactional and regulatory matters. Peter Taylor is “a great pleasure to work with” and specialises in reinsurance, alternative risk transfer, coverage issues, exit solutions and insolvency. John Trotter is “highly rated” by clients for his litigation expertise and Christian Wells provides “world-class” counsel relating to a number of issues that include dispute resolution, developing cutting edge products and drafting policies and treaties. Tim Goggin focuses on transactional and regulatory advice, and peers regard him as “a leader in the field”. Robin Spencer advises on the restructuring of financially distressed insurance companies.

Hogan Lovells has significantly expanded its life sciences capabilities practice with 21 lawyers listed throughout the US, Europe and Asia. Robert Brady is one of the leading food and drug lawyers in Washington, DC, and has been cited for his “excellent” working knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He is joined by Jonathan Kahan, co-director of the firm’s food, drug, medical device and agriculture group, whose practice focuses primarily on assisting medical device companies in navigating the FDA regulatory process. Howard Holstein focuses on medical device law and works extensively with manufacturers of all sizes and stages on a broad spectrum of FDA matters. Carla Schoonderbeek has extensive experience in European law relating to the regulation of medicinal products: both pharmaceuticals and biologicals. She is described as being “pre-eminent in her field”, and is praised for her very practical, business-focused advice and her “international approach”. Elisabethann Wright is renowned for her extensive experience in advising clients on the impact of EU policy and legislation. She is also a prominent figure in litigation before the European Court of Justice, the European Court of First Instance, and the European Free Trade Agreement Court, with a particular emphasis on pharmaceutical law, medical devices, food law and the environment.

Hogan Lovells has many of the world’s leading patent lawyers as part of their extensive international team of top practitioners, including Andreas von Falck, who specialises in litigation and counselling in the areas of patent law and all other areas of IP, with a particular focus on the pharmaceutical, medical devices and high-tech industries. He has represented prominent clients such as Novartis and Merck on the life sciences side, as well as Motorola and KPN on the technology side. Bert Oosting’s practice encompasses all areas of IP and life sciences. He has vast experience in patent litigation in all relevant technical areas, with a specialisation in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and the medical devices industry.

The firm has eight lawyers featured in the area of product liability defence. James Hourihan is regarded as “very effective” and Ina Brock (who also specialises in life sciences and patents) is one of the most famous lawyers in the field. She is considered the “number-one expert in drug liability litigation in Germany, especially with regard to defence of multinational companies.”

Competition law comprises a large portion of Hogan Lovells’ listings, with a broad range of expertise of offer, especially in the key European countries and the United States. John Pheasant is particularly well regarded. He has 30 years of experience in EU and UK competition law and advises on all aspects of competition and merger control law. Suyong Kim receives a large amount of praise from interviewees who were “very impressed with her work”. Jacques Derenne heads the antitrust, competition and economic regulation practice of the Brussels office. He has been given a “five-star” rating by his peers and is cited for his work in ground-breaking cases such as the Chronopost litigation (on behalf of DHL, Fedex, UFEX) and the landmark Alstom restructuring aid case. The practice co-head is Susan Bright, who is described as “very good “ in her field – as is Janet McDavid, who has provided antitrust transition advice to the Obama, Bush and Clinton administrations.

Other key practices include communications, banking, real estate, business crime, oil and gas, internet and environment, along with a number of other areas.
