What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Law Firm of the Year – Insurance & Reinsurance
On 1 May 2010, international law firms Hogan & Hartson LLP and Lovells LLP combined to establish one of the world’s biggest law firms. With more than 2,500 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, it is estimated that Hogan Lovells will have revenues approaching $2 billion. The merged firm now achieves 129 listings in 26 of the following chapters, making it the fifth-largest firm in our research, bettered only by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Clifford Chance, Allen & Overy and Linklaters.
Hogan Lovells is pre-eminent in the field of insurance law, and stands out as the leading firm overall in this chapter. Eleven practitioners are selected from Germany, Italy and the US, and the London office is particularly strong. The “highly respected” Peter Taylor features in our breakdown of the most highly regarded practitioners and has advised reinsurers and cedents alike. He is joined by an extremely highly regarded contingent of five further London-based lawyers. Joe McCullough in Chicago offers a “creative and commercial approach” to cases.
The firm performed extremely well in our intellectual property related chapters. The life sciences section sees an impressive 17 nominees, with Bert Oosting in particular regarded as one of the firm’s “top” names. He also appears among the nine Hogan Lovells names in the patent chapter, as does IP litigation specialist Andreas von Falck from Düsseldorf and Robert Anderson in London. Five life sciences specialists are based in Washington, DC, with Jonathan Kahan in particular recommended as a “real authority”. Janice Hogan’s biotech advice from the Philadelphia office also attracted praise. Ina Brock in the Munich office is another prominent name to build on her listing in the life sciences chapter; she also gains further recognition in relation to her product liability and aviation work. Francesca Rolla in Italy is “fantastic”, and is also recognised for both her life science and general product liability work. On top of further listings in Europe, the latter discipline also sees inclusions from the firm’s Hong Kong and DC offices in Allen Leung and James Hourihan. Eight Hogan Lovells lawyers appear in our trademarks chapter, representing “a formidable team,” in the eyes of our sources. The “excellent” Verena von Bomhard in Spain and David Latham in London were particularly well regarded.
London-based Susan Bright leads the firm’s antitrust, competition and economic regulation practice group alongside “legend of the bar” Janet McDavid in DC. A further ten nominees appear in the corresponding chapter, representing offices in Belgium, France and Germany as well as Venezuela and the US. The firm’s trade and customs practice stands comparison with any in the field. Five nominees are selected, four in Washington. Jeanne Archibald is “fantastic”, Lewis Leibowitz, Mark McConnell and “China expert” Craig Lewis also scored highly. Based in Brussels, Lourdes Catrain is viewed as one of the world’s finest trade lawyers and is selected in our elite group of the most highly nominated individuals.
The disputes practice fields a strong list of specialists. The eight nominees in the commercial litigation chapter are drawn from offices throughout Europe and the Americas. Of the four listed lawyers in London, Christopher Grierson in particular is highly thought of and also earns recognition for his insolvency work. The five Hogan Lovells nominees in the arbitration chapter include three from Germany, including Volker Triebel, of counsel to the Düsseldorf office and former German representative of the International Court of Arbitration at the ICC. The firm is also a world leader for white-collar criminal defence work – we list six of the firm’s lawyers in this chapter. Robert Bennett is “a highprofile lawyer” who “knows his stuff ” and appears alongside three colleagues from the DC office, including the “outstanding” Ty Cobb. The “exceptional” Michael Shepard is listed in San Francisco, as is Stephen Immelt in Baltimore. The quartet of featured lawyers in the regulatory communications chapter is split between the US and Europe, with Gerald Oberst in Brussels regarded as a “guru” for satellite communications matters. The firm also performed well in the internet and e-commerce research, where five nominees are selected. Two are based in Munich, with Conor Ward’s “well-regarded” work in outsourcing and disputes highly commended, and Marco Berliri in Rome and Gabriela Kennedy in Hong Kong also well regarded.
Construction law is another strength of the firm, with four partners on our list. Tony Marshall appears in London, while Timothy Hill is well known throughout Asia. Elsewhere, Ciara Kennedy-Loest in Brussels boasts substantial experience of advising public sector purchasers, utilities and bidders. She was jointly responsible for drafting the EU public procurement guidelines for contracting authorities for service and supply contracts in Eastern Europe, and is the leading practitioner worldwide in the corresponding chapter.
According to our research, the strength and reach of Hogan Lovells is far greater than that of the founder firms separately, with the benefit of several market-leading practices combined and a wider global presence.
