Hogan & Hartson LLP - Who's Who Legal 70

What is the Who's Who Legal 70?

Frank Hogan founded Hogan & Hartson LLP in 1904 as a single lawyer law firm. It has now grown to incorporate more than 1,100 lawyers in 27 offices worldwide. The multi-practice firm has 32 lawyers in 11 practice areas in this guide

Hogan & Hartson LLP in Who's Who Legal

Competition
Hogan & Hartson LLP has six listings in the competition chapter and once again it proves to be a strong practice area for the firm. Janet McDavid in Washington, DC, gathered strong approval, with sources referring to her as "the queen of the DC bar" and "someone who truly represents the top of the profession". A former Federal Trade Commission senior official, Joseph Krauss, "who's made the switch to private practice very smoothly", is also admired - "Joe is absolutely terrific," confirmed one interviewee. Three members of the European antitrust team also appear: John Pheasant ("experienced and highly effective"), Catriona Hatton ("a pleasure to work with", "very skilful") and Michel Debroux. Bruno Ciuffetelli is "the first person you would think of on any issue in Venezuela" and he also appears in the mergers and acquisitions chapter alongside William Curtin, who is known for his work on big deals.

Life Sciences
The firm's "hugely impressive regulatory practice" is demonstrated by the inclusion of five of its lawyers in the life sciences chapter; all of these practise in Washington, DC. Janice Hogan is a partner in the firm's Philadelphia and Washington, DC, offices and was described as "one of the best" and an "excellent FDA lawyer". Howard Holstein works extensively with large, small and start-up manufacturers on a broad spectrum of US FDA matters. Robert Brady is an "extraordinary attorney" and co-director of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology group. Jonathan Kahan holds a similar position in the food, drug, medical device and agriculture group and is a "five-star lawyer" and an "FDA guru". Edward Korwek is co-director of the life sciences group and is also well regarded.

Regulatory Communications
Hogan & Hartson LLP also fields five partners in the regulatory communications chapter, from three offices. The firm has three stand-out US lawyers in this field: Michele Farquhar, Peter Rohrbach and Joel Winnik. Farquhar is co-director of the firm's communications group and prior to joining the firm she served as chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau at the Federal Communications Commission. Fellow co-director Rohrbach has a practice that places particular emphasis on the telephone industry, satellite communications and information services. Winnik represents domestic and foreign telephone companies, satellite systems, wireless operators and governments in telecom privatisations and regulatory matters. Gerald Oberst, "utterly brilliant", has practised in DC but now resides in Belgium; he served for four years as the chairman of the regulatory group of the European Satellite Action Plan. Competitors hold Winston Maxwell from the Paris office in "high regard". He has represented European telecommunication equipment manufacturers and carriers in ICC arbitrations as well as representing a major US media group in the acquisition of France's largest cable network.

Trade & Customs
Hogan & Hartson LLP's greatest concentration in the trade and customs chapter is also found in Washington, DC. Lewis Leibowitz leads the group in terms of nominations with sources recommending him as "well known" and "exceptionally good". Leibowitz worked alongside the "first-rate" Mark McConnell on behalf of the six largest car producers in the world, which sought the removal of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on corrosion resistant carbon steel. The International Trade Commission voted to remove duties on four of the six countries subject to these duties. Jeanne Archibald completes the firm's high-profile trio in the US capital. Archibald represented a US company in its successful challenge to the US Department of Agriculture's suspension and proposed disbarment of the company, which resulted from the USDA's review of the agency's contractors participating in the Oil for Food Programme. Lourdes Catrain affords the firm a high-profile presence in Brussels. Catrain is Hogan & Hartson's European group director and has responsibilities for the trade practice in both Brussels and Geneva. She acted for Philips in the expiry review of the anti-dumping duties on energy saving lamps from China and is "an absolute must for inclusion".

Business Crime
The firm has three nominees in the business crime chapter from three of its US offices. The "top flight" Ty Cobb directs Hogan & Hartson LLP's white-collar crime and investigations practice group, the director of the firm's securities enforcement and compliance practice group and a former member of the firm's executive committee. Cobb is based in the firm's Washington, DC, office. Michael Shepard is a partner in the firm's San Francisco office and achieved international acclaim in the voting. Shepard led a team that won a defence verdict for the former CEO of JDS Uniphase in a securities fraud class action in which the damage claim was US$20 billion. Stephen Immelt specialises in representing health-care organisations in a wide variety of governmental investigations, both civil and criminal in nature, involving issues arising under federal and state laws that govern health care providers. Immelt practises in the firm's Baltimore office.

Aviation
Both of Hogan & Hartson LLP's representatives in the aviation chapter came highly recommended and are in the firm's Houston office. Thad Dameris "has an excellent reputation, both in terms of track-record and problem solving". His clients include airlines, and fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, airframe and component manufacturers. Bruce Oakley specialises in representing aviation, energy, finance, manufacturing and insurance clients in multiparty litigation, including class actions.

Oil and Gas
Two Hogan & Hartson LLP lawyers feature in the oil and gas chapter. Kevin Lipson is known for his "fantastic pipeline and energy work" and currently represents a major interstate natural gas pipeline. Once source described Caracas partner Luis Bottaro Lupi as "a very knowledgeable lawyer - I would strongly recommend him". He has over 20 years of experience as in-house counsel in the oil industry, most recently as the partner in charge of the oil and gas practice of a Venezuelan law firm.

Other Areas
Dennis Lehr from the firm's Washington, DC, office has represented financial institutions throughout the United States, Europe and South America and appears in the banking chapter. Alan Dye is also based in the US capital and specialises in SEC compliance issues. He has represented major food and financial companies throughout the US and is nominated in the corporate governance chapter. The "internationally renowned" James Hourihan is named in the product liability chapter. His focuses on mass and toxic tort litigation, including cases involving chemicals drugs, medical devices, electrical appliances and aircraft design defects.
