What is the Who's Who Legal '70'?
Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co is the leading firm in India according to our findings, with more than twice as many listings as any other in our Indian research, With offices in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta and Hyderabad, it boasts 14 entries divided among nine practice areas.
The firm’s impressive profile is based to a large extent on the standing of managing partner Cyril Shroff, who is the only individual in the entire publication to earn a place in six separate chapters. “One of the biggest names in the market”, Shroff received sufficient nominations to appear in a range of corporate and finance-related areas. With 25 years’ experience, his “pioneering and innovative” work on securities transactions by Indian issuers leads to an appearance in the capital markets section; he is a part-time lecturer on securities law at the Government Law College in Mumbai and a member of the primary markets advisory committee of the Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Fêted for his banking expertise, he also stood out for corporate work. Described as “one of the pillars of the Indian legal community” (he appears in the M&A and corporate governance chapters), he has been a member of many governmental and other committees on law reform concerning issues such as the corporate and securities market, bankruptcy laws and the commercialisation of infrastructure.
His “unrivalled expertise” in the latter comes from working on some of the largest projects in the country, earning him a place among the leading individuals worldwide in the project finance research. Shroff was described as “very eminent” and his work on the Dabhol Power Project attracted compliments – he also appears in the oil and gas chapter as an “authority” in that field.
Pallavi Shroff and Shardul Shroff appear in three chapters apiece.
Pallavi Shroff’s disputes expertise was highlighted to researchers, and she appears in our commercial arbitration and litigation chapters. Described by one of our sources as a “worthy opponent”, she is the most highly regarded individual in the Indian litigation research and a “real asset to her clients”. She also appears in the competition chapter for the first time, as the only practitioner in India to receive sufficient nominations to be included.
Shardul Shroff is regarded as a “first-class finance lawyer”, and appears alongside Cyril Shroff in the project finance, banking and corporate governance chapters. He is “very well respected” by his peers, and is “hugely active” across a range of projects and types of finance.
Two further partners appear on the following pages. L Viswanathan acted alongside Cyril Shroff as lenders’ counsel for ICICI Bank Limited in the financing of Lanco Group’s power project in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India, and earns a place in the project finance chapter. Rahul Guptan gained sufficient nominations to appear as the second partner from the firm in the capital markets chapter, making Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co the only Indian firm to achieve more than one listing in that section.
