What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Law Firm of the Year – Argentina
Marval O’Farrell & Mairal started life as an intellectual property boutique in 1923 and has grown to become the largest firm in Argentina. Today it has over 300 professionals and offices in Buenos Aires, Cordoba and New York.
Marval O’Farrell & Mairal is once again named as the Argentina law firm of the year, indeed it is the only firm to have earned the distinction since the inception of the award, and lawyers from the firm appear 27 times in 15 practice areas.
The firm is the national leader for banking work, and has represented Argentine Central Bank and the World Bank in recent years. Five nominees are selected, including of counsel Juan Antonio Gallo and Santiago Carregal. Both also appear in the capital markets chapter, and Gallo was part of the team that counselled the lenders and the agent in the refinancing of the US$100 million syndicated loan granted by Macquarie Bank (Australia) to Petro Andina Resources, a Bermudan oil and gas company acting through its Argentine branch. Carregal earns a third appearance in the project finance chapter, where he stood out as one of the leading lawyers in the country.
The firm has handled some of the largest M&A transactions in Argentina in recent years, and three of its partners are selected in the corresponding chapter. Each nominee also appears in further areas; Roberto Silva is well known for his banking work and recently advised Exolgan SA on the successful closure of a loan from International Finance Corporation for up to US$40 million. Alfredo O’Farrell is an “expert” on corporate governance, and Hector Mairal is “one of the deans of the bar”. He joined the firm and added his name to its title in 1991, and is “the most renowned practitioner in Argentina, by far” in the eyes of our sources. He is one of a select group of lawyers to appear in three chapters, with further listings in relation to corporate governance and public procurement.
Fernando Aguilar is of counsel to the firm, and his “outstanding disputes practice” gives it a presence in both the commercial arbitration and litigation chapters, while Iris Quadrio’s IP practice also attracted admiration – she appears in both our related sections. Miguel O’Farrell is selected for trademarks and counts Bristol Myers Squibb Argentina among his clients. With further highly rated nominees in a range of areas, Marval O’Farrell & Mairal confirms its status as one of the strongest and broadest practices in the region.
