Bonelli’s core strength is in the competition chapter, with five lawyers featuring in the corresponding section. The practice group uses its international network to advise clients on multi-jurisdictional matters relating to M&A notifications, cartels, abuse of dominant position and state aid matters. In Milan, Luca Radicati di Brozolo is a “pre-eminent” practitioner and enjoys listings across three chapters: arbitration, competition and regulatory communications. In Rome, head of the firm’s antitrust department Claudio Tesauro is “very highly rated” and has considerable experience in a range of regulated sectors. Alongside him, Luciano Di Via has represented clients before the European commission and Italian competition authority across sectors including telecommunications, transportation, refined tobacco and gaming and betting. In Brussels, managing partner of the office Massimo Merola is the scientific director of the firm’s European law and antitrust group and his knowledge is “second to none”. Founding partner Aurelio Pappalardo is also located in the Brussels office and is “renowned” for his competition work covering both domestic and cross-border matters.
Four lawyers feature in the M&A chapter, three of whom also feature in the corporate governance chapter. Founding partner Franco Bonelli has a broad practice and is considered “outstanding” in the M&A, corporate governance and insolvency chapters. Bonelli is a “leading expert” in Italy and highly regarded by peers and clients alike. Sergio Erede, also a founding partner, features in both the corporate governance and M&A chapters and has advised on many of the most significant transactions in Italy, including Olivetti’s takeover of Telecom Italia. Alongside him in both chapters is Umberto Nicodano, a member of the firm’s partners executive committee and coordinator of the firm’s internationalisation strategy. Completing the quartet is Roberto Cera, who is featured in our M&A and real estate chapters. Cera is also a member of the firm’s executive committee and advises on corporate transactions as well as real estate spin-offs and sale and lease-back transactions.
Three names appear in the arbitration chapter, signalling this as another of the firm’s key strengths. Alongside Luca Radicati di Brozolo in Milan is Antonio Crivellaro, a “greatly respected” international arbitrator and counsel. He focuses on disputes relating to international procurement, construction contracts, foreign investment, and international commercial contracts to name a few. In Rome, Andrea Carlevaris is “outstanding” according to peers.
