The firm shines in the corporate governance chapter. The “very active” Marc van der Haegen counsels clients on financial regulations and corporate governance. He also earns a mention in the banking chapter as former counsel to financial institutions such as Euroclear Bank and Citadel Group. The inclusion of Geert Raaijmakers reflects the firm’s strong Dutch practice. Willem Calkoen works primarily in M&A and joint ventures, with a focus on securities and corporate governance, and has acted for AT&T, ICI and General Electric on domestic and cross-border matters. He has long standing experience in the area, demonstrated by his place in the M&A chapter. Also appearing in the M&A and corporate governance chapters is R Hein Hooghoudt, who has worked on major acquisition deals providing corporate governance advice on remuneration packages and shareholders’ rights to clients such as ABN AMRO, Stork NV and Flint.

In the capital markets section, Willem Ruys is the “standout” lawyer. He was involved in the first public securitisation transaction in the Netherlands and has over 30 years’ experience in this field.

Petra Zijp offers a “tailored, client-centred service”. She has acted as special counsel to a number of public corporate clients, and became known in the field as counsel to the first three special purpose acquisition companies to be listed on the European continent. She is joined by Jan Paul Franx, a specialist SPAC adviser and an “expert” in issuings and private securities offerings.

Alongside van der Haegen in banking, Pim Rank and Jan van Rijswijk feature. Rank is included as a regular adviser to the Dutch government on bearer securities. He practises in derivatives, collateral, repos, securities lending, clearing and settlement, among other areas, and has represented the country at The Hague. He is lauded as “very knowledgeable” in the area. Van Rijswijk is highly rated in our research.

NautaDutilh is known for its insurance practice and this year it has two lawyers based in Amsterdam and one in Rotterdam. Stijn Franken specialises in regulatory compliance, mass tort claims and technical damage. He is highly regarded by his international peers. Sjoerd Meijer is a generalist insurance practitioner, representing insurance companies and intermediaries. In Rotterdam Eric van Niekerk main focus is insurance liability concerning construction, infrastructure works and marine transport. In life sciences, Liesbeth Weynants has particular expertise working with innovative, research-based life-sciences companies and co-heads the firm’s multidisciplinary life sciences group.
