Arthur Cox - Who's Who Legal 70

What is the Who's Who Legal 70?

Described by sources as “one of Ireland’s premier full service law firms”, Arthur Cox has been a fixture of the Dublin bar for more than 90 years and enjoys listings in 20 of the following chapters.

Arthur Cox in Who's Who Legal

In the past year the firm has advised on the restructuring of the ROLF Group and undergone expansion in numerous departments, including corporate and M&A, tax and dispute resolution.

Four Arthur Cox lawyers rank highly in the M&A chapter, including head of corporate Colm Duggan, whose “world-class” transactional, joint venture and corporate finance work has seen him act for the likes of Liberty Global, BT, Topaz Energy and Unilever in recent matters. Ciarán Bolger is another of the firm’s “leading lights” for transactional work according to peers who recognise his recent work on behalf of such clients as Airtricity and Reox Holdings as “first-rate”.

The firm fields three representatives in the corporate tax chapter. Head of tax Conor Hurley is internationally renowned as a tax adviser in mergers, inbound investments and structured financings having acted for Gus Plc in its recent demerger and Warner Chilcott Group in its migration to Ireland and acquisition by Procter & Gamble. Fintan Clancy and Caroline Devlin are also “prominent” names in this section.

The competition section also sees three of the firm’s lawyers place highly. John Meade founded Arthur Cox’s EU and competition group in 1990 and acts as its head, advising Irish and international clients on merger control and state aid issues as well as arguing cases before regulators in Dublin and Brussels. Fiona McKeever has acted for Reox Holdings and Breeo Foods, UTV, Aer Lingus and UGC (now Liberty Global) in merger control and competition matters and is a “real asset” to the group, as is maritime specialist Patrick O’Brien.

Patrick McGovern is one of the firm’s best recognised lawyers, earning listings in the oil and gas, public procurement and regulatory communications chapters. McGovern heads both the telecoms, electronic communications and broadcast group and the utilities, energy and resources practice within the firm and is lauded for is commercial projects work for public and private clients. Head of projects and energy Alex McLean adds his name to the oil and gas chapter and peers praised his “exceptional, broad based” practice, which encompasses conventional and renewable power projects, electrical interconnector issues, upstream and downstream gas work and energy regulatory work.

Isabel Foley leads the firm’s product liability and product safety group and achieves international recognition in the life sciences, commercial litigation and product liability defence sections, having acted for the likes of Greencore Group, Gallaher and Benson and Hedges in recent matters. Also listed in the litigation chapter is Conor McDonnell, who is particularly well thought of for shareholder, financial services and banking disputes and professional negligence claims.

Further recognition in a number of sectors, including financial services, environment and real property, prove the firm’s strength in-depth.
