The firm’s corporate strength is clear in our research, with four nominees apiece in our corporate governance and M&A chapters. William Braithwaite is recognised for his work with governments and regulatory authorities on policy matters, while Sidney Horn is fêted for his “encyclopedic knowledge of corporate law”. On the bankruptcy side, the firm earns two further listings in Toronto for their insolvency and restructuring advice, and three nominees are picked out as leading corporate tax experts. Ronald Durand manages the firm’s tax practice in Toronto and is rated as “fantastic”.
Stikeman’s banking and finance capabilities are similarly well renowned. Four nominees appear for their capital markets prowess, including former chair of the firm Edward Waitzer and the “first-class” Simon Romano. Two further practitioners are selected in the banking chapter, including the “phenomenal” Michael Allen in Vancouver. Allen is also noted as an international project finance specialist, and garners a third listing for his expertise in the mining sector. Jay Kellerman is one of the most highly rated individuals in the world in the mining research, and the firm’s impressive showing in this sector is underlined by the presence of the “excellent” Derek Linfield in London. The oil and gas expertise of Glenn Cameron in Calgary further complements Stikeman’s “market leading” practice in this sector.
The firm’s competition practice is internationally recognised. Four nominees are selected, with Lawson Hunter deemed “one of the best competition lawyers in Canada” and Susan Hutton universally viewed as a “terrific lawyer”. Katherine Kay heads the firm’s competition litigation practice, and Shawn Neylan is seen as a “pre-eminent merger lawyer”.
On the disputes side, John Judge is “very well respected” both as counsel and as arbitrator, and appears both in the arbitration and litigation chapters. He is joined in the latter by two further high profile nominees in Peter Howard and David Byers.
The firm also gains three nominees apiece in the environment and real estate chapters. In the former, Larry Cobb is particularly highly regarded, while managing partner of the Vancouver office Ross MacDonald is highlighted as an “outstanding real estate expert”.
