What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Law Firm of the Year – Public Procurement
Since its creation in 1930, Allen & Overy LLP has become an international powerhouse. With around 5,000 staff, including more than 450 partners working in 34 of the world’s major cities, the magic circle firm boasts a comprehensive network of expertise. We list 152 of the firm’s practitioners in 23 of our 31 chapters. In 2007 A&O became the first foreign law firm to be licensed to open an office in Abu Dhabi.
In September 2007, the firm established an associated office in Riyadh with Abdulaziz AlGasim Law Firm before launching in São Paulo in September 2008. With a new office in Perth adding to its strong Australian presence in 2010, A&O’s reach continues to expand.
Project finance is the firm’s most noteworthy area, with 18 lawyers listed and while the firm’s international expansion grabs headlines, its London base remains at the heart of A&O operations. Four partners from the London office feature in the project finance chapter, two of these appearing in our round-up of the most highly nominated individuals (alongside Bimal Desai in Dubai). Global PFI/PPP head Anne Baldock is another of the most highly regarded lawyers in the sector and was recommended for her “calm and resourceful” approach. The firm’s project finance expertise can be further seen with nominees in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the US.
The firm’s competition practice is also very impressive; 16 A&O lawyers are listed for their competition work. Among these are Philip Mansfield and Mark Friend. Both are based in London and sources noted that Mansfield “commands great respect”. In Belgium, Michael Reynolds and Martin Bechtold are highly regarded; the firm’s lawyers also appear in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, China and the USA sections of our competition list.
Capital markets is another strong area with a 15-strong contingent in that chapter. Again, the firm’s “hugely impressive” London office stands out, with eight inclusions. Boyan Wells is “one of the leading authorities worldwide” and among the most highly regarded people in the field. US-qualified Jeffrey Golden is “one of the big names”, while Stephen Miller is well known for his high-quality work. In the Middle East, Roger Wedderburn-Day’s vast experience was repeatedly highlighted. The firm’s strong capital markets practice is represented in five other European countries and in Asia, where the “superb” Andrew Harrow leads the regional practice from the Hong Kong office. The managing partner of the Singapore office Kenneth Aboud is also well regarded.
