What is the Who's Who Legal 100?
Firm of the Year –Australia, China
Formed in March of 2012 following the merger of King & Wood and Mallesons Stephen Jaques under a Swiss Verein structure, King & Wood Mallesons emerges as a new legal superpower in the Asia-Pacific region, with 20 offices throughout Australia, China, Japan and Hong Kong, as well as three well-established bases in the UK and USA. The sheer breadth of its newly combined offering gives it better coverage than any other law firm in China and Australia – two of the most closely-watched economies in the global marketplace – and earns our Law Firm of the Year awards in both jurisdictions. Lawyers from the firm appear 90 times across 24 of our featured disciplines, demonstrating particularly strong credentials in the corporate and financial spheres.

Fourteen lawyers represent the firm in the M&A chapter, nine of whom are based in mainland China. Xu Ping is one of six lawyers listed from the firm’s Beijing office and earns praise from peers for her “first-rate” foreign investment, technology transfer and international transactions expertise, having worked at the China National Technical Import & Export Corporation prior to joining the firm. Wang Rongkang represents the Shenzhen office and boasts particular expertise in the fields of infrastructure, real estate, trade, pharmaceuticals and technology, while Zhang Yi, one of two lawyers listed in Shanghai, is recognised for his work on behalf of insurance and telecommunications clients. In Sydney, Glenn Golding focuses his practice on multibillion-dollar share listings, acquisitions, investment transactions and demergers. He and fellow Sydney resident David Friedlander earn further listings in the corporate governance and capital markets sections, where the firm fields a total of six and seven lawyers respectively.
Banking and finance is another of the firm’s strong suits. Lawyers from Australia, China and Hong Kong rank highly in the banking section, with King & Wood managing partner and head of financing Wang Ling earning particular recognition from peers. Hailed as “one of the leading financial services lawyers in China”, Ling is praised for her acquisition finance, in and out-bound investment, credit facilities and syndicated loans, as well as her “very strong” aircraft financing expertise, which earns her one of the firm’s five listings in the aviation chapter. Over the past year, Sydney-based Yuen-Yee Cho has acted on behalf of Bradken Ltd, Paine & Partners, Sydney Airport and Broadcast Australia in debt and transactional matters over the past year and is described as “excellent” both in the banking and project finance sections. The firm fields a further five “big names” in the project finance chapter, including Melbourne’s Jeff Clark and Sydney’s Peter Doyle, who both emerge as “leading” talents in public procurement and represent the firm in that section. Clark also adds his name to the firm’s impressive banking contingent.
Head of King & Wood’s cross-border dispute resolution practice Ariel Ye is praised as “world class” and earns listings in both the arbitration and litigation chapters for her work for multinationals, financial institutions, and large-scale foreign and domestic enterprises in proccedings both in and out of court in mainland China. Sydney-based Peter Stockdale is named in our list of the world’s leading litigators and is the firm’s sole representative in the insurance section, while a further three names appear in the arbitration chapter. Hong Kong’s David Bateson and Melbourne’s Peter Megens focus their arbitration work on ADR in construction matters and add their names to the latter section, alongside a further two specialists.
The internet, e-commerce and data protection chapter is home to five “first-rate” lawyers. Maurice Gonsalves is based in Sydney and counts Microsoft and Starbucks among his recent clients in IP matters, and his accomplishments in the latter field earn him a further listing in the trademarks section alongside Beijing’s Yang Xiaoli. Melbourne’s Wayne McMaster is the head of Mallesons’ national IP practice and a “hugely important” practitioner in the patents space, according to sources. He ranks prominently in the latter section and is particularly well recognised for his work in matters pertaining to pharmaceuticals and medical devices, consequently appearing in the life sciences section.
Recognition in a further nine disciplines attests to the global prestige of this newly minted partnership and speaks of the strength in the depth on offer to clients.
Sharing a history of bold innovation and a vision to create a global law firm anchored in Asia, King & Wood and Mallesons Stephen Jaques have come together to create a new legal powerhouse with a uniquely Asian view of the world.
