Law Firm of the Year - Switzerland
Home to some of Switzerland’s leading lawyers, Lenz & Staehelin wins our award as the country’s leading firm for an impressive sixth consecutive time.
Finance and corporate law remain areas of particular strength for this firm and two individuals in particular stand out for the extent of their expertise. The “outstanding” Rudolf Tschäni is listed in our banking, corporate governance and M&A chapters. As head of the firm’s corporate and M&A group, he regularly advises on international and domestic transactions, including public tender offers and private equity buyouts. Also featuring in three chapters is Andreas von Planta. Recommended for capital markets, M&A and corporate governance, he regularly advises boards of public companies on governance matters.
Head of the firm’s banking and finance practice group in the Zurich office, Patrick Hünerwadel is a recognised banking expert. He is particularly known for his work in structured and lease finance, asset securitisation and derivatives. Stefan Breitenstein, co-chairman of the banking law practice group of the Zurich Bar Association, is also noted. Shelby du Pasquier supplements his appearance in the banking chapter with a listing in our private funds section. One commentator’s “favourite lawyer in Switzerland for funds work”, he is outstanding in this field. Co-head of the firm’s banking and finance group in Geneva, François Rayroux is a recommended practitioner for both private funds and capital markets.
Corporate tax is another of the firm’s strong suits and four partners feature in the corresponding chapter. In Zurich head of corporate tax, Pascal Hinny, impresses with knowledge of national and international tax planning while head of tax, Heini Rüdisühli, deals with corporate reorganisation and acquisitions. Located in the Geneva office, the highly nominated Jean-Blaise Eckert is respected for his focus on tax planning for multinational groups of companies and for private clients.
With a total of 31 representatives across 15 of the following chapters, the firm is recognised across a spectrum of practice areas. Held in high esteem for their “top-tier” competition work are Benoît Merkt and Marcel Meinhardt. First rate for IP matters, Thierry Calame comes highly recommended in relation to life sciences and complements this entry with an impressive number of nominations in the patents chapter. For internet and e-commerce work the “highly recommended” Lukas Morscher doubles up with an inclusion in the regulatory communications section. Counsel to the firm, Urs Baumgartner is praised as a leading Swiss management, labour and employment specialist.
