What is the Who's Who Legal 70?

Simmons & Simmons in Who's Who Legal

Seven Simmons lawyers are listed in the regulatory communications chapter. In London, Alexander Brown is noted for his commercial contract and regulatory work, encompassing large-scale outsourcings, procurement contacts and privacy compliance. The “superb” Tom Wheadon is also well regarded in London and Florence Guthfreund-Roland is a “prominent name” at the Paris office. High-tech “expert” Filippo Fioretti divides his time between the Rome, Milan and Padua offices and is noted for his competition and commercial law work. Octávio Castelo Paulo is responsible for the corporate and commercial practice in the Lisbon office of Sociedade Rebelo de Sousa in association with Simmons & Simmons, a partnership that sees Portuguese and English lawyers advise clients on all aspects of domestic and international legal matters. Alexander Shepherd is head of Simmons’ Middle East TMT group and keeps offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha. Damien Bailey joined the Hong Kong office in 2008 and has handled numerous high-profile joint ventures and acquisitions. Brown, Wheadon and Shepherd are also recognised in the internet and e-commerce chapter alongside London-based Michael Sinclair.

The firm’s private funds team counts Blue Crest Capital Management, Cambridge Associates and RBS Asset Management among its clients and has six London-based representatives in our private funds section. Iain Cullen specialises in structuring hedge funds and advising hedge fund managers and is “a European market leader”, while Noel Ainsworth is praised for his work in established and emerging markets. Richard Perry comes “highly recommended” for investment and hedge funds work, as does the “outstanding” Steven Whittaker.

London-based Rowan Freeland is a “leading name” in the life sciences section and earns a further listing in the patent chapter. Kevin Mooney is also listed in both chapters, while Richard Binns and Mark Curtis add to the firm’s presence in our life sciences chapter. Jacques- Antoine Robert in Paris is recognised in the life sciences section for his “excellent” disputes work and appears again in the product liability chapter alongside Miles Alexander in London. The firm also has two IP professionals in the trademarks chapter: London’s David Stone and the “superb” John Slater in Hong Kong.

Simmons provides four lawyers from three European offices for the business crime defence chapter. Louise Delahunty and the crime, fraud and investigations group head, Nick Benwell, are both “top flight” in London according to peers. Luca Basilio is highly regarded in Milan and Ed van Liere is a leading name in the Rotterdam office.

The management labour and employment chapter features three Simmons & Simmons lawyers, including Fiona Loughrey who was hailed as “outstanding” in Hong Kong. London’s Mark Hewland and César Sá Esteves in Lisbon add their names to the firm’s “renowned” group.

The firm achieves a total of 44 listings in this edition and demonstrates further strength in real estate and construction, natural resources, aviation, antitrust and bankruptcy.
