What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Law Firm of the Year – Ireland
A&L Goodbody achieves 36 listings in the current edition, all drawn from the Dublin head office. We also name it as Ireland’s leading law firm for the fifth consecutive year.
The corporate practice makes the biggest contribution to the firm’s listings. The M&A chapter features five A&L Goodbody lawyers. Michael Greene is a consultant and former chairman and head of the firm’s corporate practice, and is a “leading” professional in the M&A and corporate governance sections. Head of corporate finance Eithne FitzGerald is a “superb name” in M&A and is also one of three A&L Goodbody lawyers in the insurance and reinsurance chapter. Corporate tax is another strong suit and head of tax Peter Maher received more nominations than anyone else in Ireland during our research, with peers noting his “exceptional reputation” for inward investment, cross-border structuring and capital markets transactions. James Somerville, David Glynn and the “senior and experienced” John Hickson join Maher in this chapter.
A&L Goodbody appears in the “elite” band of Irish competition law firms in Global Competition Review’s “GCR 100” and three members of the firm’s team feature in the corresponding chapter. Vincent Power heads the firm’s EU and competition group and is “a force to be reckoned with” according to our sources. Power has been involved in over 400 merger filings in Ireland and the EU and he advises both national and multinational clients as well as public and private bodies. Alan McCarthy also ranks highly here, as does Anna-Marie Curran who earns a further listing in the public procurement section.
Former chairman of the firm Marcus Beresford is a “highly regarded” name for disputes work and is included in both the commercial litigation and product liability chapters. Liam Kennedy is the head of the dispute resolution department and is listed prominently in the arbitration chapter.
Catherine Duffy is head of the firm’s aircraft section. Duffy is an “outstanding” aviation finance lawyer, and her group has advised RBS Aerospace, Aircastle and Credit Suisse Securities. Séamus Ó’Cróinín also performs well in our aviation research.
Tom O’Connor is a former leader of the commercial property department and is a “well-established” figure in the real estate chapter. Niamh O’Sullivan also features and was praised for her pre-funding developments, property-based syndicated finance and site acquisitions and disposals work.
A&L Goodbody appears in an impressive 22 of the following chapters, an increase of two chapters on its listings in the previous edition, and further confirmation of its reputation as Ireland’s leading law firm.
