What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
McCarthy Tétrault LLP has developed a reputation as one of Canada’s leading business and litigation firms.
In this edition the firm enjoys 56 listings in 21 chapters, including strong appearances in the real estate, M&A, capital markets, competition, internet and regulatory communications chapters.
In real estate, McCarthy Tétrault has the largest contingent in Canada, with six practitioners listed in four provinces. Abraham Costin is based in the firm’s Toronto office and has represented OMERS Realty Management Corporation and Oxford Properties Group, among others. His practice centres on insolvency, realisation, leasing and conveyancing. Pierre-Denis Leroux is based in Montreal, where he is “well known for his financial know-how”, with an interest in mortgages, real estate financing, acquisition, disposition and development of real estate assets. Gordon Sato has wide-ranging experience in real estate related transactions and sources have only “the highest praise for him”. In Calgary Keith Mullback is “knowledgeable” in all areas of real estate law, but received plaudits for his commercial leasing, conveyancing and development. Keith Burell QC’s practice involves extensive work with major real estate developers, both local and offshore, as well as real estate investors seeking commercial income properties.
Three of the firm’s inclusions in the M&A field, also make an appearance in the capital markets chapter. In Vancouver Richard Balfour acts for private and public corporations, investment dealers, merchant banks and private equity funds in finance and M&A deals. Garth Girvan specialises in public M&A in Toronto. He was counsel to BCE in its US$1.3 billion acquisition to CTV, and acted for Agrium in its AS$1 billion bid for AWB of Australia. He is joined by Graham Gow, who has been involved in Xstrata’s takeover bid for LionOre Nickel and BFI’s merger with IESI.
Cameron Belsher and Patrick Boucher are further nominated in the M&A chapter and Rene Sorell makes a showing in the capital markets section as an “expert” on securities.
The competition section showcases five of the firm’s lawyers. Montreal based Yves Comtois and Madeleine Renaud stand out for their representations of high-profile members of the natural resources, pharmaceutical, and agribusiness industries, among other areas. Three inclusions are based in Toronto which is regarded as an “established” centre for competition matters.
McCarthy Tétrault emerges as a leading firm in the internet and e-commerce chapter. In Toronto, George Takach is the head of the technology practice group and his clients have included Aastra Technologies, Constellation Software and Opalis Software.
