Sidley Austin LLP - Who's Who Legal 70

What is the Who's Who Legal 70?

Law Firm of the Year – Trade & Customs

Law Firm of the Year – Illinois

A total of 92 lawyers from Sidley Austin LLP are recognised in this edition, over a third of whom are based in the firm’s Chicago office and, as such, Sidley emerges as leading law firm in Illinois for the fourth consecutive year. In 2009 the firm strengthened its presence on the west coast of the US with a new office in Palo Alto, and the London office saw the launch of its dispute resolution practice.

Sidley Austin LLP in Who's Who Legal

Sidley has more lawyers than any other firm in the trade and customs chapter and is the only firm ever to win our law firm of the year award in this practice area. Nine lawyers are listed from three offices in Europe and the US. Andrew Shoyer chairs the firm’s international trade and dispute resolution practice from the Washington, DC, office and is “world class”. Richard Belanger’s “terrific” practice is also well regarded.

The firm has three further listings in DC, and three lawyers in Geneva recognised for their trade practices. They appear along with Laurent Ruessmann in Brussels, who is known for providing “technical trade remedies” regarding EU and member state legislation, in addition to WTO agreements.

Capital markets is another strong suit and 11 Sidley Austin lawyers appear in that chapter. Joseph McLaughlin is “revered” by peers, and is joined by five colleagues from the New York office – Norman Slonaker is highly regarded, and Cathy Kaplan, co-head of the New York structured finance and securitisation practice, received recommendations from sources across the globe. The four listed individuals from the Chicago office include the “stellar” Thomas Albrecht, co-head of Sidley’s global securitisation and structured finance practice group. The firm also appears in the California and London listings and should be considered “one of the leading players in this field”.

Sidley Austin is the leading firm for life sciences work in the US with eight partners listed in four offices. Product liability expert Sara Gourley is a “top name” at the firm’s Chicago office, with experience in complex, multi-jurisdictional coordination and defence of class actions. Also prominent in Chicago are products liability and mass torts practice head Michael Davis and national IP practice chair David Pritikin. The New York, DC and Los Angeles offices are also represented.

Senior counsel Angus Macbeth is among the most highly nominated practitioners in the environment chapter and he is joined at the DC office by environmental group leader David Buente. Roger Martella and Timothy Webster are also based in the US capital, while further listings in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles help establish the practice as “one of the county’s best”, according to sources.

Sidley provides six lawyers for the insurance and reinsurance chapter, including Susan Stone, who co-heads the firm’s global insurance and reinsurance disputes practice. Also listed is insurance and financial services group co-chair and reinsurance and insurance insolvency practice leader James Stinson. The private funds chapter also features six of the firm’s lawyers. Michael Schmidtberger acts as co-chair of the investment funds, advisers and derivatives group out of the New York office, where he is joined by Susan Lewis. Further listings in Chicago, London and Hong Kong highlight the firm’s international strength in this practice area.

Sidley achieves listings in a further 18 of the following chapters, exhibiting a breadth and depth of expertise that places it among the world’s pre-eminent law firms.
