What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Baker & McKenzie was established in 1949 in Chicago and now has 3,900 locally admitted lawyers in 67 offices worldwide. In the following pages the firm has 124 lawyers listed in 26 practice areas across 31 jurisdictions.
Baker & McKenzie has 12 practitioners in the corporate tax chapter, its strongest area. At the head of the pack is David Tillinghast in New York. Richard Lipton in Chicago and Leonard Terr in Washington, DC were highlighted to researchers for their prolific writing and tax controversy expertise. The firm also has the benefit of a strong presence in Asia with Michael Olesnicky in Hong Kong and Yukinori Watanabe in Japan. Olesnicky was the only lawyer we selected for the Hong Kong section.
The firm performs well in our competition research, with nine lawyers featured across six jurisdictions. These include the “outstanding” Roxane Busey in Illinois who has more than 30 years’ experience advising companies on antitrust issues and the “talented” Samantha Mobley at the firm’s London office. In Brasília, Tulio Freitas do Egito Coelho provides “superb” counsel as does the “impressive” Fiona Carlin in Brussels.
Baker & McKenzie, which boasts Google among its clients, has nine lawyers listed in the internet and e-commerce chapter. Johan Nylén in Sweden is one of the most highly nominated from the firm while Harry Small in London is “very well-informed - he knows what he’s talking about” and Patrick Fair in Sydney has an “excellent” reputation. From the head office in Chicago, Michael Mensik is “great for outsourcing work”.
Eight Baker & McKenzie lawyers, from jurisdictions as diverse as Thailand, Texas and Colombia, appear in the trademarks chapter. One impressed peer considers Russia-based partner Eugene Arievich “top in the country”. A “true trademarks specialist”, he is noted for his “hugely impressive knowledge of local and international trademark law”. Stephen Jones, based in London, is “exceptional for technology-heavy work” and Margaret Boulware was praised as “a dean of the Texas bar”. The firm recently achieved a groundbreaking infringement case in China for Harley-Davidson.
The firm has an impressive real estate practice with seven lawyers selected in Argentina, Belgium, Poland and Russia. Dominique Lechien heads the group in Belgium and is said to be “improving on his excellent reputation every year”. Rudy Dupont is a partner is Brussels and “a considerate and efficient” practitioner. Gustavo Boruchowicz and Alejandra Verónica Bugna are based in Buenos Aires. Boruchowicz specialises in contract negotiation and Bugna focuses on real estate sales and acquisitions.
Baker & McKenzie has seven lawyers listed in six jurisdictions for their management labour and employment practice. In Chicago, Robert Mignin is a “first-class” lawyer; he represents domestic clients in single-plaintiff and class-action employment and discrimination litigation. Günther Heckelmann is at the firm’s offices in Frankfurt and recently handled major restructurings of the European operations of Kraft Foods and Ecolab. Christine O’Brien is head of the firm’s employment group in London and advises clients on large-scale collective redundancy plans, discrimination claims and the enforcement of restrictive covenants.
Baker & McKenzie’s environment and climate change practice aprovides our publciation with seven practitioners across the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, Latin America and the US. Martijn Wilder heads the firm’s global climate change and emissions trading practice from the Sydney office. He was described to researchers as “the leader in the climate change field” and a “real stand-out” practitioner. The “remarkable” Federico Ruanova Guinea coordinates the firm’s environment and natural resources practice group in Mexico.
The firm’s project finance practice has a global reach with seven lawyers identified in six jurisdictions. Mohamed Ghannam in Cairo is regarded as a “brilliant” lawyer. In Singapore, Paul Elliott is an “authoritative” figure and recently advised on a US$3 billion financing of an expansion and upgrade of an existing telecoms network in India. José Raú Félix-Saúl is based in Ciudad Juarez and coordinates the climate change and renewable practice groups in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
In a sector where geographical spread is so important, Baker & McKenzie has six of its partners featured in the mining chapter from five countries. Antonio Ortúzar Jr in Chile is “one of the best mining lawyers in Latin America”. Adolfo Duranona in Buenos Aires is also well respected, as is Roberto Mendoza in Caracas. The firm is particularly strong in the CIS. Carol Patterson is managing partner of the Moscow office and one of the leading mining lawyers in Russia according to our findings.
Our regulatory communications chapter has a strong contingent with six lawyers from the firm featured. Joachim Scherer in Frankfurt and Peter Strivens in London are highly rated for their “exceptional” counsel.
