What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Law Firm of the Year – Insolvency & Restructuring
Weil Gotshal & Manges has over 1,200 lawyers in 20 offices worldwide and a reputation as one of the world’s most prestigious law firms. Lawyers from the firm appear 42 times in 15 practice areas, and in many cases are among the leading experts in their field worldwide.
This is especially true in the area of insolvency and restructuring law. The firm wins our insolvency and restructuring law firm of the year award for a second time in this edition, and also produces the leading individual lawyer in that practice area. Marcia Goldstein heads the firm’s business, finance and restructuring department, and is “absolutely brilliant”. Her colleague Harvey Miller is also one of the best-known bankruptcy practitioners in the US, and both are among the highly nominated lawyers in this practice area worldwide. Four further partners from the firm appear from across the US, and the insolvency and restructuring team has represented General Electric and Reuters among others.
The firm can also call upon the services of the world’s leading corporate governance lawyer in the form of Norman Veasey. A former chief justice of Delaware, he is the “top choice” of many of the clients we surveyed. The firm has offered its services to clients such as General Electric and GE Capital, General Motors, Lehman and Tyco Electronics in recent times, and sees five further partners nominated. Ira Millstein is a “leader in his field”, and Holly Gregory is widely regarded as “a talented lawyer” who received recommendations from every quarter.
The four nominees in the competition chapter are split between New York and Washington, DC. One source said he would vote twice for Steven Newborn if he could, and fellow co-head of the global antitrust/competition practice Helene Jaffe was also highly recommended. Ann Malester and Fiona Schaeffer join them in the following pages.
The New York office provides four nominees for the corporate tax chapter, with Kimberly Blanchard in particular well known for her work on behalf of clients such as General Motors and private equity firm Falconhead Capital. Paul Asofsky is also highly rated in Houston.
Four trade and customs experts appear in New York and DC. Jean Anderson is a renowned international trade strategist and litigator, and Charles Roh is a veteran of more than 25 dispute settlement proceedings under the WTO and GATT. In New York, Stuart Rosen specialises in regulatory and commercial matters.
Weil Gotshal is also strong for banking and finance matters, as three nominees in both the banking and the capital markets chapters demonstrate. Three lawyers are selected for their private funds work, including Jeffrey Tabak, one of the leading experts worldwide. The practice has represented clients such as American Securities Capital Partners, Lee Equity Partners and HM Capital Partners in recent times.
With a presence in seven further chapters, Weil Gotshal is without doubt one of the finest law firms in our research worldwide.
