Competition and Corporate
Six practitioners from Weil Gotshal appear in the competition chapter. In 2008, the team successfully represented Exxon Mobil alongside other oil companies in defeating certification of a national class action, which alleged conspiracy among oil companies to restrict petrol supply and increase prices.
Global co-heads of the antitrust and competition practice, partner Helene Jaffe in New York and partner Steven Newborn in Washington, DC, were consistently praised throughout our research. "They are both at the top of their game," says an interviewee.
DC partner Ann Malester is "vigorous, intelligent and great for pharmaceutical work". She is a former antitrust enforcement official at the Federal Trade Commission. Partner Jean Anderson in Washington, DC, leads a contingent of four in the trade and customs chapter. She receives the most nominations for the firm and is joined by the highly recommended "anti-dumping specialist" Charles Roh. Head of Weil Gotshal's international trade practice Joanne Osendarp previously served as senior trade counsel with the government of Canada and the "excellent" Stuart Rosen is one of New York's most respected practitioners for trade and customs work.
Weil Gotshal has six members listed in the corporate governance chapter. In New York, partner Ira Millstein boasts an impressive client list, which includes General Motors, Walt Disney, the New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Ford Foundation. Fellow partner Robert Todd Lang is a "conscientious adviser" and "inspiring speaker". The "talented" Holly Gregory, the "very smart" Mary Korby, and the "skilled" Mary Korby are also highly recommended.
The "top choice" in Wilmington is Norman Veasey. He is a former chief justice of Delaware and has a "very impressive track record". Veasey is the winner of Who's Who Legal's corporate governance lawyer of the year award. Paris partner David Aknin is the firm's sole representative in the mergers and acquisitions chapter.
Finance
Weil Gotshal has a longstanding reputation as an insolvency and restructuring "powerhouse". The firm has five lawyers listed in this chapter and receives both the law firm and lawyer of the year awards for insolvency and restructuring.
The insolvency lawyer of the year is Marcia Goldstein, who chairs the business finance and restructuring department. She is highly recommended along with fellow New York partner Harvey Miller whose "reputation is unsurpassed". They are joined by Alan Miller in New York, Dallas partner Martin Sosland, and co-head of the Paris business finance and restructuring department Jean-Dominique Daudier de Cassini.
Four individuals from Weil Gotshal feature in the captial markets chapter, three of whom are based in Eastern Europe. They are Anna Frankowska and Pawel Rymarz in Warsaw and Konrad Siegler in Budapest. In London, Jacky Kelly has an "excellent reputation".
Five practitioners from the firm's "strong tax department" are listed in the related chapter. In New York, partners Kimberly Blanchard and Kenneth Heitner received significant praise during our research. They are joined by Martin Amdur and Martin Pollack, also in New York, and senior counsel Paul Asofsky in Houston.
Weil Gotshal boasts a "top-drawer practice" for private funds work. This "well respected group" of three New York practitioners received numerous nominations and possess a "high level of professionalism". Co-chair of the corporate deparment Barry Wolf, Jeffrey Tabak co-head of the private equity fund formation practice and partner Shukie Grossman were described as "highly knowledgable" by interviewees.
In the banking chapter, Glenn West and Angela Fontana in Dallas are listed alongside Konrad Siegler in Budapest. Elizabeth Evans is well-regarded for aviation finance work and the sole representative for the firm in the aviation chapter.
Other Areas
Five members of Weil Gotshal are listed in five other chapters. They are Matthew Powers who is "one of the top on the West coast" for patents work. The internet and e-commerce chapter lists Michael Epstein, who is a "leader" by all accounts.
