What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP sees its presence in this edition grow to 60 listings in 16 practice areas, an increase of 13 on last year’s compendium that demonstrates the firm’s recent success in a number of areas.
The firm’s strongest performance is in the competition research, where 12 partners are selected. Ten are based in the US, a number of experts unmatched by any other firm in the country. In California, Gary Spratling stands out as one of the pre-eminent practitioners worldwide; he is “way up there in terms of ability” in the words of his peers. Daniel Swanson is “hugely knowledgeable”, while Robert Cooper was also consistently recommended to researchers. Three further lawyers are selected in Washington DC, as well as further representatives from New York, Dallas and Brussels, where Peter Alexiadis also stands out for his expertise in relation to regulatory communications.
Gibson Dunn performed extremely well in the research for our real estate chapter, growing its contingent to 10 in this edition. The “hugely well regarded” Dennis Arnold leads the firm’s seven US based nominees in the voting, and Jesse Sharf was praised for his “user-friendly practice, everything he does benefits the client”. Two further nominees in Singapore demonstrate the breadth of the firm’s expertise in this sector, which is underlined by a further nominee in Germany.
The firm has an excellent reputation for corporate matters, with its expertise relating to governance particularly well known. John Olson is one of eight inclusions in the corresponding chapter and is a “spectacular lawyer” in the eyes of his contemporaries. Respondents also cited Amy Goodman’s previous SEC experience and “first-class practice”. Three further partners are cited for their M&A practices, with Dennis Friedman scoring highly.
On the disputes side, Laurence Shore is internationally renowned for his commercial arbitration practice, and six nominees are selected in the litigation chapter. Randy Mastro scores highly in New York and clients “sing the praises” of Theodore Boutros in California. Philip Rocher is well regarded in London. The practice was further strengthened when William Dawson joined the Dallas office in early 2011.
Other areas in which the firm excels include labour and employment where three lawyers are listed, and a further trio are selected in the trade and customs chapter, all based in DC. Gibson Dunn’s white-collar criminal defence capability is also recognised with three inclusions in our business crime chapter.
With nominees selected from the US, Belgium, England, Germany and Singapore, Gibson Dunn’s stature continues to grow.
