Mayer Brown was founded in 1881 in Chicago and is a leading global law firm with key offices across the Americas, Asia and Europe. The global scope of the firm has recently been enhanced by two recent strategic partnerships with Tauil & Chequer Advogados in Brazil in 2009 and with JSM (previously Johnson Stokes & Master) in 2008. The firm’s real estate group has six lawyers listed. Those who are highly rated include John Gearen, who is considered a “superb” lawyer while Keith Willner advises a number of clients that include institutional developers, banks, private equity and opportunity funds.
Mayer Brown has a strong contingent of lawyers in the capital markets chapter, with six lawyers featured. The firm’s group provides expertise in the areas of corporate, securities, banking, finance and securitisation. Jason Kravitt is regarded as a “statesman” and Bruce Perce is highly recommended for his expertise in representing foreign issuers, underwriters and investors in a broad range of capital raising transactions.
The firm has five nominees in the competition chapter. In DC, Robert Bloch is “great for merger work” and Richard Favretto is a “big player”. The “excellent” Richard Steuer appears in New York, and two further listings in the Chicago HQ demonstrate the depth of the firm’s strength in this area.
Mayer Brown receives four listings in the banking chapter, all of whom are based in the US. Michael Niebruegge in Houston receives the most nominations for the firm in this area and provides “outstanding representation” while Douglas Doetsch in Chicago is described as “brilliant” by those familiar with his work. The firm was recently advised SoFFin in the establishment of the first “bad bank” in Germany for WestLB in which €6 billion will be removed from the banks balance sheet.
Project finance is also a strong area for the firm which sees four lawyers featured from the US and UK. In Chicago, Barry Machlin serves on the firm’s partnership board, co-chairs its global projects group and is a “terrific lawyer”. In New York, George Miller represented senior bank lenders in the financing of the $1.6 billion concession over Interstate 595 in Florida.
Mayer Brown’s London office finds three of its partners included in the construction chapter, headed in the voting by Nicholas Henchie. A “leader in the field”, he was picked out for his FIDIC knowledge – he chaired the IBA committee on FIDIC contracts – as well as for his procurement work and his background in ICC, LCIA and ad hoc arbitrations relating to projects around the world. Jonathan Hosie is a “go-to guy” for construction and engineering contracts.
The firm has two nominees listed in the trade and customs chapter. Brussels-based Paulette Vander Schueren is “brilliant” and is one of the world’s most highly regarded lawyers in the field and is particularly knowledgeable in international trade compliance, WTO, customs and European Union matters.
