Mayer Brown LLP - Who's Who Legal 70

What is the Who's Who Legal 70?

Law Firm of the Year – Hong Kong

Mayer Brown LLP in Who's Who Legal

Mayer Brown LLP’s lawyers appear in 25 of the following chapters, representing a total of 14 offices across Europe, Asia and the Americas. A particularly excellent performance in Hong Kong through the combination with Mayer Brown JSM sees the firm earn our law firm of the year award in that jurisdiction.

Real estate emerges as the firm’s strongest suit. Eight lawyers rank prominently in this chapter, including global head of real estate and “leading player” Jeremy Clay in London, who counts British Land and the Canary Wharf group among his clients. Further European strength is demonstrated by Hans Hofmann’s listing in Frankfurt, while the Washington and Houston offices field a combined total of three lawyers, with “brilliant” firm-wide practice leader Keith Willner earning particular praise. The “great” Andrew MacGeoch heads the Asia hospitality and leisure group and the real estate development and commercial team out of the Hong Kong office, where Fun Kuen Au is also recognised. At the same office, Kevin Owen is lauded for his work on behalf of Kowloon Canton and MTRC and he is listed in the construction chapter alongside two “first rate” names form London.

Mayer Brown is recognised in Global Competition Review’s most recent “GCR 100” survey as one of the leading governmental antitrust law firms in the US, and five lawyers from three US offices represent the firm in the corresponding chapter. DC’s Robert Bloch is the “first port of call” for many sources for his “world-class” defence work for corporate entities before the DoJ Antitrust Division and the FTC. Richard Favretto in DC and Richard Steuer in New York further demonstrate the firm’s east coast profile, while Andrew Marovitz and Lee Abrams come highly recommended in Chicago, with Abrams earning an additional listing as one of two Mayer Brown lawyers in the franchise chapter.

The “exceptional” Jason Kravitt in New York is the founder of Mayer Brown’s securitisation practice and represents the firm in both the capital markets and banking chapters, where the firm fields a total of five and four lawyers respectively. The New York office also places three lawyers in the upper reaches of the insurance and reinsurance research, including global coordinating practice head Kenneth Pierce whose expertise in representing private equity groups and banks in insurance matters is considered “top-flight”.

The firm’s project finance capabilities are closely tied up with its strong presence in the natural resources sector. São Paulo-based Stephen Hood is well regarded for his corporate, securities and infrastructure transactional work and is listed in both the project finance and oil and gas chapters, while London’s Ian Coles supplements his “strong” projects profile with a “praiseworthy” mining practice.

A further 15 chapters see listings from Mayer Brown lawyers, showing it to have one of the more diverse talent bases of any firm in the current edition.
