What is the Who's Who Legal 70?
This firm's history dates back to 1885, when the founding partners started their practice in Atlanta, Georgia.
Nowadays, its enviable client roster features Coca-Cola, GlaxoSmithKline, Deutsche Bank and Shell Oil, to name but a few. King & Spalding's 880 lawyers are spread across offices throughout the United States, as well as at its international practices in Europe (London, Frankfurt) and the Middle East (Abu Dhabi, Dubai and an affiliated office in Riyadh). The firm stood out in our research, featuring a total of 46 times across 18 practice areas.
Dispute Resolution
King & Spalding has improved on its good performance in last year's publication, with six lawyers included for commercial arbitration and five for commercial litigation (up from two and four, respectively). The firm's arbitration practice includes the "impressive" and "accomplished" Doak Bishop in Texas, where he practises alongside the "solid" John Bowman, as well as Craig Miles and Reginald Smith. The "superb" Margrete Stevens joined the firm in 2007 from the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes. She is based in Washington, DC, where she works alongside fellow nominee Kenneth Reisenfeld. The firm's commercial litigation contingent in our book includes the "excellent" Chilton Davis Varner, Daniel King and Joseph Loveland in Georgia, while Jeffrey Furr and Robert Meadows were also of particular note.
King & Spalding provides a strong trio for our product liability chapter -Varner is "wonderful" while Furr is "a top-drawer trial lawyer". The prominent Donald Zimmer, based in San Francisco, also features. These three form part of a "fantastic group".
Corporate Work and Regulation
King & Spalding's competition team is represented by three lawyers: Kevin Sullivan, who is "easy to work with", Jeffrey Cashdan and Jim Griffin, who is a "very good criminal antitrust attorney" and former deputy assistant attorney general for criminal enforcement in the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division. The firm's contingent in our business crime chapter is made up of the "very strong" Sedwick Sollers, of Washington, DC, and his colleague Stephen Cowen in Atlanta.
Joseph Dorn, the founding partner of King & Spalding's international trade practice, and Gilbert Kaplan, both in Washington, DC, represent the firm in our trade and customs chapter, while Michael Egan is selected for his M&A practice.
Our corporate tax chapter features the "very skilled" Herschel Bloom and the "excellent" Robert Woodward, both of whom are based in Atlanta. King & Spalding's insolvency and restructuring practice is represented here by the "hugely experienced" Myron Sheinfeld in Texas and by James Pardo in Atlanta.
In other practice areas, the "highly recommended" Albert Conrad features in our banking chapter, while the "excellent" Daniel Rogers is included for his work in the project finance area.
Oil & Gas and Real Estate
This firm's reputation for oil and gas practice is excellent - six of King & Spalding's oil and gas lawyers merit listings. Philip Weems, who heads the firm's global energy practice from Dubai, is considered to be "a very good combination of vast experience and technical knowledge of energy matters." Kenneth Culotta is "highly thought of" and "bright"; John Bowman is equally "well regarded" and Doak Bishop appears again - people "can't say enough good things about him".
The highly recommended Bill Fryer heads King & Spalding's real estate practice and splits his time between Atlanta, New York and Hamburg, and is joined by his colleague Mason Stephenson. Our construction chapter features the "excellent" John Hinchey, who received a phenomenal number of nominations.
Intellectual Property
In our trademarks chapter, Clark Lackert, Bruce Baber and Ethan Horwitz, who has a "great reputation", all secured an impressive number of nominations. All three practise in New York, although Baber is also based at the firm's home in Atlanta. Another feather in the firm's IP cap is Anthony Askew, included in our patents chapter.
The King & Spalding life sciences practice is represented by Edward Basile, Donald Zimmer and Chilton Davis Varner (earning her third appearance in our book), all of whom received a high number of nominations.
